“This is America” PART THREE. Please see the artist’s feed (@gracieleeart) for parts one and two. 🗣
I’m doing this series of drawings because I know that art has the power to change minds. Young people have the power to change minds. I know this first hand. I’ve been working on this series all day for 3 days. Do I want to be doing this? No. I really wish I didn’t have to but I do. There have been so many shootings in places all over this country that it would take weeks to draw them all. As I’m drawing I’m thinking of all the people and families whose lives have been destroyed by gun violence. I have met many of them. I’m thinking about the innocent children in Sandy Hook. I’m thinking of the grandparents murdered in the synagogue. I’m thinking of the dozens of people in Chicago that were shot this weekend but didn’t even make the news. I’m seeing stories of families in El Paso and Dayton who are still in a state of shock. We’ve had enough and we’ve made that very clear. But nothing ever changes. So I ask you again to listen to the majority of Americans who are urging you to call an emergency session in the senate to allow for a vote on universal background checks. The time is now and every day you wait makes us one step closer to another tragedy. #endgunviolence #enoughisenough#enough#neveragain#gunviolence#gunsense#gunreformnow#backgroundchecks#wheresmitch#emergencysession

Repost from @barackobama on Toni Morrison’s passing. :
Time is no match for Toni Morrison. In her writing, she sometimes toyed with it, warping and creasing it, bending it to her masterful will. In her life’s story, too, she treated time nontraditionally. A child of the Great Migration who’d lifted up new, more diverse voices in American literature as an editor, Toni didn’t publish her first novel until she was 39 years old. From there followed an ascendant career—a Pulitzer, a Nobel, and so much more—and with it, a fusion of the African American story within the American story. Toni Morrison was a national treasure. Her writing was not just beautiful but meaningful—a challenge to our conscience and a call to greater empathy. She was as good a storyteller, as captivating, in person as she was on the page. And so even as Michelle and I mourn her loss and send our warmest sympathies to her family and friends, we know that her stories—that our stories—will always be with us, and with those who come after, and on and on, for all time.

Dear Senators bought and paid for by the gun lobby,
I’m happy you are all having such lovely summer vacations, but just a reminder: while you are enjoying your time at home, more people are going to be slaughtered in preventable shootings around the country. More Americans will buy guns that allow the average person to become a killing machine. More mothers and fathers will never get to tell their children “I love you” for the last time. More children will never get to grow up. More people of color will be targeted by white supremacists fueled by the hateful rhetoric of our president. And by deciding not to take immediate action after the horror El Paso, Chicago, and Dayton have suffered this week (along with many other U.S. cities) you are sending us a clear message that you continue to reiterate— Blood money and vacations matter more than our lives. Please end your recess and take an emergency vote on gun safety NOW. #endgunviolence#enoughisenough#enough#neveragain#gunviolence#gunsense#gunreformnow

She went through the titles of the chapters and said: “Mom, I know which chapter is going to be my favorite one, chapter three, Don’t Stare, Just Ask!” I’m sure she won’t stop reading until she gets to the end, she’s super excited.” (We are also super excited!)

Last week I, along with @mom2summit @jillkraus.e, went to the Val Verde Border Humanitarian Coalition to unpack boxes of donations, bear witness and get to know the hard-working volunteers. As our friend Jill Krause wrote on her blog, “Seeing anger and sadness and all these other feelings we’ve all been feeling turned into ACTION was a powerful experience. “
We watched as volunteers welcomed families and gave backpacks to them filled with supplies. We saw the relief on the faces of parents who were able to give food, toys and clean clothes to their children. We witnessed our shared humanity.
There are so many good-hearted people wanting to help. Here are a few things you can do: Learn more about why people are here asking for asylum. Follow @vvbhcoalition on Instagram and donate via their Amazon Wishlist. They need a lot, especially shoes.
