I finally got around to doing a tribute for ”The Soft Parade” by one of all time favourite bands, The Doors. But you know, how do I take a picture of my camera and my camera stand if they have to be in the picture themselves? I guess I could have photoshopped it, but I really must draw the line there - my idea is to mainly just use PS for backgrounds and the rest I want to keep as reenactments. And so this ended up as the creative decision - a salute for this 50 year old record, released in june 1969 🥂✨💙
Released during a period of great stress for the band, this was a breaking point for their sound and image - moving away from gritty blues rock and into a slightly odd collection of songs, themes and vibe; like sunshine pop in ”Tell All the People” and the catchy Kinks-esque ”Touch Me” to acid jazz and art rock in the lenghty and slightly pretentious title track which honestly I am known to skip... And this is the problem; it’s by no means s bad record but it’s the weakest one with Jim Morrison as lead figure. I can deduct two things from this: a lot of the songs were written with Jim absent or absent minded which means, even though they were all great musicians in their respective own right, Jim was crucial to their direction and presentation, and also, for all the experimentening they do here with strings, piano and sugary production, they were always at their best when they were dirty, sludgy and bluesy. That’s something that becomes quite clear towards the latter part of the record when ”Wild Child” and ”Runnin’ Blue” turns up - it’s like ”oh, THAT’S what’s been missing!”
It may be a weak Doors album but that’s a great album by other bands standards. Great horn sections, Jim is always explosive in his vocals and it’s explorative, experimental and it has actually aged very well. A recommended listen if you want to dig deeper into this band’s history.
After two years as a full time entrepreneur, today I’m doing something crazy 👾 I’m going back to corporate America for an incredible, once-in-a lifetime opportunity. I’ll post more about my new job over the next few weeks. In the meantime, I want you to know that I’ll still be blogging and posting because being a content creator is an important part of my life. .
On a funny note, my friends wanted me to post a photo of me holding a “first day of work” chalk board like moms have their kids hold when they are going back to school 😆 We went “back to work” shopping this weekend and they were more excited to pick out clothes for me than I was. The greatest friend moms a girl could ask for @marli_onthemove + @craneonalake ❤️
