Happy Valentine’s Day all. Hubby and I are having a super budget one this year. We’ve given each other a card and that’s it. No fancy meals, no dine in for 2 just a card. Don’t get me wrong I’m a little disappointed I’m not getting a nice meal tonight as I’m such a foodie but it’s nice not to have the stress over the day. Anyway hubby and I have been talking recently about our overuse of technology. We are always online. Work, entertainment and socialising all happen using technology. So we have decided we are going to do a tech free night every week. Tonight is our first night. From 5:30pm no tech. I know this isn’t going to be an easy but it’s good to challenge ourselves. Sabbath. 🌿 .
In a world of busy, where social media is the answer for this business owner’s day in, day out “Hey, I’m here 👋🏼” marketing, it can be quite overwhelming - Feeling like you’re in a constant game of PAC Man - trying to not be eaten by the ever-changing multitude of algorithms and the constant hustle of wearing so many hats. 🎩 .
So, for two days, I switched off my phone. .
I reflected. .
I read. .
I ruminated. .
I forgot what it was to really rest. .
The anxiety dropped. The comparing stopped at a halt. I had room to move within my head, and let the to-do lists rest. .
With that, I’m currently making a plan of how I can make the most of my time on social media so that I can fully rest the hustle in my head the moment I’m off it. .
Hustle is good - it’s needed to make the most out of opportunities- but, with all things, it has a place. .

Flettner wings and the Magnus Effect, here’s the lone youtube video I found showing a brave russian soul attempting flight with such a design. Looking like a spinning washing machine on wheels, things did not quite turn out as planned for our hero. Nonetheless, a big salute to the fearless (and batshit crazy) fellow for volunteering himself as a flying guinea pig. He’s got the wright attitude…Bravo!

I Made It Through The Weekend!
Not only did I want to disconnect, but I literally had to because my phone got smashed on the very first day. 📱 .
Fabulous weekend with family and friends, Campfires, s’mores, kayaking, fishing, swimming, and outdoor crafts. .
As important as our phones and computers are to our daily lives, it is more important to disconnect and be in the present. It also made me greatly appreciate clean running water, bathrooms, showers, and washing machines when I got home. 😆 .

/ What is Mindfulness /
Mindfulness has become a really popular topic over the last few years. The term ‘mindfulness’ is enough to scare some, however its really a simple concept that everyone can and should aim to achieve. A lot of people talk about mindfulness as if it’s a tool, however I believe that mindfulness is a choice of lifestyle. There are many tools to achieve a mindful state; meditation, exercise, journalling, gratitude, and organisation to name a few.
Mindfulness is NOT about dressing a certain way, eating a certain food or being happy all of the time! Its NOT about being peaceful, calm and still all the time or even switching off negative emotions. Being Mindful requires a complete awareness of your thoughts and patterns of behaviour, it encourages you to create a space between your emotions and your reaction. It is stepping out of automatic patterns of thinking (yelling, hitting, screaming) and reacting.You will still always experience difficult emotions, though you will have the skills (aka the brain muscles) to deal with them better.
Mindfulness is quite the opposite to mindlessness.
To be mindful is:
- to be fully present and in the moment - aware of where we are and what we’re doing
- not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us

What is load shedding? In South Africa, to deal with power shortages, they schedule power outages. Today we experienced two of these power shut-downs for a total of 5 hours of no power, including no internet. Is it inconvenient? Yes. Do we hate it? No. Why? With the internet, there is a constant need to be doing something - working, scheduling, communicating. It’s great to have time without it. And at night, when there’s only one light in the house, it brings everyone together. So, I went to get my new iPhone all set up. My jaw nearly hit the floor when I was told it was going to take three hours to get everything transferred from my old phone to my new one 😳
Normally, I would’ve gotten sweat beads on my lower back and neck area (anxiety + irritation= sweat beads 🤷🏼♀️). But instead of displaying a look of annoyance and a sigh of frustration, I decided to laugh about it, call Adam, and go get myself some dinner.
I sat my ass down right at the bar and ordered a red wine and sandwich at Buffalo Wild Wings. It was the strangest feeling when I reached in my purse for my phone and had the lightbulb 💡 moment: I don’t have a phone. I don’t have a phone for the next THREE HOURS!!! I felt naked. It felt like I was missing a limb. I drummed my nails on the bar, tapped my foot on the barstool, and tried to look at the three TVs in front of me. After a while, I decided to just observe what was around me. Almost everyone had a phone out except for the three older men next to me who were playfully teasing the friendly bar tender. Then I thought about how I went the first 17 years of my life without a phone and the first 25 years of my life without a smart phone 🤯🤯🤯 Then the thoughts started: “That lady has such a beautiful complexion.” “Those people came in after me but got their food first.” “I’m starving. I feel like I’m gonna pass out.” “Whoa, I might puke.” “That lady is sitting all by herself. I wonder if she prefers it that way.” “Those three bartenders must be really good friends.” The endless thoughts went on for the entire hour I was there. Then it dawned on me: I am just like that good looking psychopath from the @Netflix show, @You!!! Aside from the whole murder thing, of course 😅 But I had nothing else to occupy my mind and nothing to close off my own real thoughts. No texting, no Facebook or Instagram. No checking Amazon to see if my order was going to come in time. Nothing. Just me and my thoughts.
Moral of the story, don’t be a murderer, but DO allow yourself to think without the influence of your phone 🤷🏼♀️ Don’t allow social media to run your mind or your life. Let your mind breathe and have some space.

GAH.... these last couple weeks have been ROUGH. I won’t even go on to list out the junk that’s happened... but in the midst of a chaotic terrible week last week- my baby, as we waited for pizza to take home for game night- said “hey mom let’s take a selfie and then go screen free for the rest of the night” •taking a picture was the last thing I wanted to do after the amount of mess, emotions, and tears I’d dealt with that day. But this boy... and his sweet self- changed my night. We played games, we laughed, we snuggled, and we just spent time. I swear this baby is the most precious being on the planet, and even though I do not feel worthy to be his mom- he loves me so dang much. Even when I am unlovable - he loves me. 🤍🖤
