AVOCADOS FROM MEXICO - SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL 2017
Happy monday everyone. Something slightly lighter for the start of the week.
This spot from last year’s Super Bowl, shot with long time collaborator @davyshane out of Opositive films NYC and produced by my good friend Ken Licatta @jiggs007, was a challenge in many ways…
The job kept getting pushed later and later and by the time it was awarded they had under three weeks to shoot, edit and VFX it before delivering it to the broadcaster.
I didn’t help that all the studio space in and around Toronto was booked solid. It was only through the kindness of a few TV producer friends I knew that we were able to secure a sound stage at Revival studios.
The spot grew from one pre-light, two shoot and a de-rig (4 days) to two pre rig, one pre light, two shoot and two de-rig days.
Luckily I have a long history with this producer and director and our shorthand makes these challenging situations way more manageable.
We originally had 65 Space Force Chroma -Q’s in the soft box but paired it down to a more respectable ~40 in the air, with arri maxs in two lifts for a harder back edges as needed. Our board op, #desireelidon, had a chase sequence programmed that looked like clouds rolling by but in the end we decided to drop it in favour of more freedom in the edit (easier to match shots). @jessonmoen and the art department shipped up three 53’ refer trucks full of palm trees and tropical plants from FLA to create the scene.

Awesome writeup in @adweek about this series of spots for MoonPie released on Super Bowl Sunday. Basically— these were a series of fake Super Bowl scripts written last year, then this year as a surprise… we actually shot some of them. Amazing client, agency & crew all around!
