Box jumps are a little misunderstood at times... yes it is fun to try and jump on a tall box, but there is actually some physics behind why we do them. .
In short, box jumps are designed to reduce ground reaction forces during landing, by reducing the velocity you hit the ground with. .
When we jump, peak velocity occurs at takeoff. Say you leave the ground at 3.0m/s vertically. Based on physics, you go up into the air and your velocity slowly reduces, then you hit your peak of the jump height where velocity is 0 and then you make your way back to the ground. Because physics is symmetrical in this sense, when you land you will hit the ground at 3.0 m/s - the same speed you took off with. The more velocity we have at impact the higher our momentum is and the more force we need to create to brace our fall
A box jump cheats the system. You have artificially “raised the ground” with it and when you land you land at much lower velocities because you didn’t actually fall from that high. The box stops you well before the ground, which stops the build up of velocity. .
If you look at the graphic below, you see that the jumping “arch” isn’t a symmetrical upside down U. Instead, it stops have half down the right side because we are landing on the box, which is however high off the ground you make it. ,
We know jumping can create large impact forces on the knees and in season we may want to reduce the impacts but still keep the jumping movement. This is where box jumps can come into play. It’s a great way of jumping without having to deal with some of the concerns that come up with landing - more stuff coming from @theedgeu

Deadlifts 4x6 at 152.5kg, then lots of loading on the hammies 😛 filmed; eccentric deficit RDLs & DB hamstring curls. I do squat I promise, it’s just rare that I film them 😝 .

I was just thinking to myself the other day... “I feel so strong”.
I don’t know if it’s because I’m in my 30’s, or if it’s because I just have a different perspective on life, but I feel freaking good. I notice myself making health and fitness strides all the time despite what my younger self would’ve considered minimal efforts.
You guys probably don’t know this about me because I never talk about it, but I used to be the girl that counted calories hardcore. If I went over I would take it away from another day that week. I would only eat fat-free foods (I’m talking Ruffles sour cream and onion fat free chips by the bag full), and forced myself to work out almost everyday even though I was studying for hours and desperately needed rest. I would look in the mirror and point out the negatives because, why not? Gotta have goals right?!
Well I finally realized that this “push yourself” and “can’t stop won’t stop” mentality of mine was NOT conducive to good mental health OR even physical health. The amount of stress and forced restriction I was putting onto myself was actually working in reverse and taking me farther from my goals.
I get asked all the time about my fitness routine and diet. I don’t keep one! I swear I am healthier and happier when I keep it low stress and just do my best these days. I choose sleep over exercise if my body is tired. I choose to indulge when the time is right but always make an effort to add in wholesome foods and plant based foods on a regular basis. I never touch “fat free” products anymore. If I’m going to eat or drink it, I’d rather have whole ingredients. No artificial crap!
More than anything, I have chosen to enjoy life and throw out a lifestyle that includes harsh restriction, because I swear just being happier makes you healthier.
I won’t be in any fitness competitions anytime soon 😂 but I sure do feel strong. Even amongst the crazy work life and schedule that I live.
What do you notice in your life that makes you feel strong?
At the end of the day
your feet should be dirty,
your hair messy,
and your eyes sparkling ✨
