Short Term 12 (2013) is an indie drama film written/directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. It is based on a short film of the same name that he also wrote/directed.
Short Term 12 is the name of the group home for troubled & neglected youth in the film. It follows an ensemble cast led by Grace (Brie Larson), who is one of the caretakers & main supervisor in the group home.
The rest of the ensemble cast comprises of troubled teens Marcus (Lakeith Stanfield) & Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever), while the other caretakers are Mason (John Gallagher, Jr.), Nate (Rami Malek), & Jessica (Stephanie Beatriz). It was nice seeing Rosa from Brooklyn 99 actually being nice & friendly lmao.
As I've said, this is now my favourite film of all time & I only just watched it last night. Then I rewatched it again this afternoon just to be sure & I am sure as hell now cause I've really never related to any other film as much as I have to this film. I related to Manchester by the Sea cause of the character's personality but Short Term 12 related to my fucking life.
It isn't flawless but I will lay out the positives & negatives I noticed & also the negatives pointed out in other reviews.
This film hit home real hard. It tells stories of children who were abused/neglected/abandoned by their blood parents & family. This is a film that concentrates on the victim's perspective & the child's perspective. I have problems with my own dad & watching this film fucked me up good.
The performances of Larson & Stanfield were terrific & award-worthy in my opinion but this film for some fucking reason was completely ignored by EVERY major award show. Fun fact, if this film didn't exist or if Larson wasn't cast, she wouldn't been casted in Room (2015) & wouldn't have gotten her Oscar. This film put them both on the fucking map.
