What a fun week of #loveatlanta. Monday I served with my mom and threw a baby shower for pregnant women in jail with @heartboundministries Wednesday I served with friends and we packed meals for @fmsc_org . Today I served with my children and cleared out a tiny part of the Beltline with @parkpride. There are so many great opportunities year round to serve the beautiful people of Atlanta. Thankful for all the ministries @passioncity partnered with this week.
This is America: “Kent,” a 68 year old veteran dying under a bush outside million dollar properties in LA. The softball size tumor on the side of his face is now a gaping hole. Dried blood covers his hands and face. Flies swarm around his head, not bothering to wait for him to die before laying their eggs in the open wound that is crawling with hundreds of maggots. He tries to speak, but I can no longer understand him. This is fucking America! “I’m just looking for a place to die,” he said. Those were his first words to me when I first discovered “Kent” about a month a go in shallow bed under the bushes outside my place. Like many people, my initial gut reaction was, not in my backyard! But I know better. I’m aware that homelessness is a symptom of our broken and wasteful system, and the basic lack of decency, and compassion towards one another. We treat people like trash. We want to discard the parts of society we don’t want, but like plastic, it’s never going to go away. All we do is make the problem worse, rather than realizing that our own habits are the problem. The way we treat people is the problem. We speak to one another through our own filters, and judgements before we even get to know them. So, instead I brought “Kent” water, and sat down to talk with him for awhile. He pulled his hoodie aside and showed me the tumor on the side of his face. “I did it to myself,” he said. Years of smoking was the likely cause. He went to the VA for medical care, but he said that he felt like they were just waiting for him to die so he left. I asked if I could get him some help, but he didn’t want it. “I’m just looking for a place to die,” he said.

⚠️FALSE⚠️ I'm getting very tired of seeing this myth be thrown around. The ideology behind it is that's the world's livestock population eats all of the crops that could be used to feed the hungry. This isn't true because of three reasons:
1) Grain that livestock eats is actually not entirely composed of crops fit for human consumption. There is soybean and sugarcane (in the form of molasses) in cattle feed, however, the operations that use these are fairly easy to avoid if you know how to look. The majority of what makes up the grain that goes to feed livestock is seeds, especially corn seed and cottonseed. Also, the waste products from canola seed and cotton oil production are manufactured into cattle grain. This waste would otherwise pollute waterways and could intoxicate wildlife or aquatic animals.
2) There is not as large of a food shortage in the world as this kind of propaganda would like you to believe. The problem lies mostly within food distribution. America produces enough food to feed 140% of the population, however 15% suffer from poverty that can cause them to go hungry. The food manufacturers get more money to export fresh produce than to sell it to the poor. One good thing about animal products is that they are harder to ship overseas, so they are actually more available and fluctuate on prices more, making them easier for America's poor to buy.
3) Getting rid of livestock would make growing crops much more difficult because manure is used as natural fertilizer. Agriculture is a circle, and all branches are interconnected. You can't just do away with one, all others would be negatively impacted.

In times of #separation and #conflict, the need for deep, empathic human connection as a community healing practice takes precedence over individualised ideas of #selfcare.
. "#Sympathy is easy. You have sympathy for #starvingchildren swatting at flies on the late-night commercials. Sympathy is easy because it comes from a position of #power. Empathy is getting down on your knees and looking someone else in the eye and realizing you could be them, and that all that separates you is luck.”
- Dennis Lehane
When our strong political opinions overpower our ability for #compassion, and the need to be 'right' is stronger than our ability to be #kind it is something to investigate and address collectively. .
While we are far away, there is a lived reality of #trauma and #fear, #isolation and #helplessness. Empathise with this #human experience and let's begin to form a community that helps heal rather than break our human #spirit. Let us protect our whole #humancommunity with #love and #compassion

Before I get blasted by the religious right, this is NOT about God. This is about those that can't see the obvious problem with dumping millions into these unnecessary monstrosities that serve no other purpose than to try convincing those on the fence that this particular congregation is the way to go and, oh by the way, don't forget your checkbooks. If there is a God, this is NOT what he wants us to do with our disposable income. Not when so many others are starving around the world that we're slowly (or not so slowly) ruining every single day. "Church" is everywhere around you if you're living your life the way he wants you to - it's not in some fucking multimillion dollar building. It's like driving a Rolls Royce into the poorest part of town and asking all the people on the street to donate money so the kids in that very neighborhood can eat and get an education, then leaving and driving back to your home in the hills without giving anything yourself
82% of starving children live in countries where food is fed to animals ,which are then eaten by westernized countries.
Let that sink in for a sec.
Many people still don’t realize what it takes for the meat industry to exist. Taking into account its massive, negative impact on global warming, the health of our oceans, species extinction, and water usage to name just a few, it has been called the single most destructive industry in human existence.
Even when people are aware of some or all of that, many still don’t consider just how much food these animals need to eat in order to grow and how incredibly poor the return on calories is from the meat they provide.
Approximately 1 in 9 PEOPLE globally do not have enough food. And, nearly 15,000 CHILDREN DIE EVERY DAY from starvation, even though we currently produce enough food to feed nearly 2 EARTHS worth of people.
This is beyond unacceptable.
