Dear Met Grand Finalists (and all performers, really):⠀
As a 2007 Grand Finalist, I know all the hard work, sweat, and tears that went into making Sunday’s finals. Congratulations!⠀
I'm sure you’ve heard no shortage of opinions this week 😉 You may feel a bit overwhelmed trying to incorporate all the feedback you’ve gotten. I sure was!⠀
Having stood where you will on Sunday and coached many Grand Finals winners over the years to perform with more freedom and joy, I hope this will help take stuff OFF your plate and give you some peace of mind:⠀
🌟 Be You. ⠀
That’s what got you there, and that's all you ever need. YOU are your greatest superpower as an artist.⠀
🌟 The Met is just another place we sing. ⠀
I know, that sounds crazy! But when you strip "OMG THE MET!" away, you’re simply doing the same thing you do all the time – singing and storytelling. The more you see that Sunday is just another chance you get to play storyteller, the more you'll sing the way you do any other day.⠀
🌟 You can rock even if you’re freaking out!⠀
Feeling nervous? That's okay! We don't need to feel great to sing great. We're capable of performing well whether we feel amazingly confident or wildly insecure. And when we're not busy trying to feel the "right" things, we're free to be present and sing. And the present is where all your magic happens.⠀
🌟 Win or lose, you're always okay.⠀
Your wellbeing and worth are innate. They're not contingent on this competition, how well you sing, what people think about you, or anything else. Winning the Finals won’t make you, and not winning won’t break you. You’ll walk out the Met Stage Door Sunday evening exactly as okay as you were when you showed up, regardless of the outcome.⠀
I know. I didn't win, and life turned out just fine 😊⠀
Play with this question: If you knew for certain you'd be okay no matter what, how would you approach Sunday? Take your answer, and go be that.⠀
Have a blast on Sunday, and remember:⠀
You have nothing to prove, and everything to share! ❤️⠀
You are ALL enough,⠀

Coping strategies can either be healthy or unhealthy.
They are generally either problem-focussed or emotion-focussed.
Problem-focussed would be a strategy employed to deal with the situation or circumstances.
Whereas emotion-focussed strategies are used to help deal with the feelings surrounding a situation.
Research has shown that people in fact use both.
Problem-focussed strategies tend to be used when a situation is controllable and emotion-focussed when circumstances are perhaps beyond a person’s control, or perceived control.
Let’s take performance anxiety, or stage fright, as an example.
An example of healthy problem-focussed strategies could be to make sure you know your material inside and out and that you arrive in plenty or time.
A healthy emotion-focussed strategy could be to employ a particular relaxation technique like meditation, for example.
An unhealthy emotion-focussed strategy would be to get tanked up before a gig, in order to avoid and ‘drown out’ the feeling of anxiety.
What healthy strategies work for you? Leave a comment below 👇🏻 [image description: text defining what coping strategies are]

Sooo ive been told that i need to share my talents with the world. I just dont usually bc i have crazy stage fright and i don't want to feel like im showing off and i dont like attention. But today, i challenged myself and shared a poem/rap i wrote for my friend. I've been writing for years but keep most my words to myself. But im trying to get out of that. I know i messed up a lot at the end and i know my rhythm is off (my rhythm is dancing lol) but at least im putting myself out there.

This is not an Actor’s Nightmare episode but definitely a must listen to nightmarish tale. ‘Jack Hitt tells the story of a small town production of Peter Pan in which the flying apparatus smacks the actors into the furniture, and Captain Hook's hook flies off his arm and hits an old woman in the stomach. By the end of the evening, firemen have arrived and all the normal boundaries between audience and actors have completely dissolved. _ This American Life @thisamerlife 👉🏼thisamericanlife.org/699/fiasco • •

Review: Stage Fright
Synopsis: A theatre production is under siege by a madman who goes on a killing spree.
My take: This film was a chore to sit through. Despite its cult status, I didn’t find any redeeming value in this. Skip at all costs.

feeling a blue vibe while editing sophie’s recent! by the way, i am loving stage fright so much, it has risen the ranks to my favourite shows. I do love a good mystery. My favourite character is Lizzie because I relate to her a lot. Fun fact, I’ve been supporting Sophie since the start of her YouTube career started, her covers are literally amazing and she has an AMAZING voice! My favourite original songs by her are Someone Else In The Dark and No Brakes, these songs are always on repeat whenever I listen to music! And don’t get me wrong, watching her videos or IGTVs and listening to her song makes me really really happy! And that’s why I love her and support her so much! •

Richard Manuel, (April 3, 1943 – March 4, 1986) is a man whose character resonates very deeply with me. He was the pianist, and one of three lead vocalists of The Band. He sang with heart. He died depressed. The lessons of life that some people bring us aren’t always clear and concise. These people aren’t always clear or concise to themselves either. They represent something intangible in their spirit, something that everyone feels but no one talks about. The word sweetness is the closest word I can get to explain what Richard taught me. It’s not that sweetness is a quality of someone’s character, or something that we are from time to time in kindness. Sweetness is a way of life, an essence of humanity that can’t be broken in those who believe in it, and refuse to believe in otherwise. Keep searching, Richard.
From “Sleeping” (Stage Fright, 1971)
For the life we chose in the evening we rose
Just long enough to be lovers again
And for nothing more, the world was too sore to live in
Sad old ships, a morning eclipse
I spent my whole life guessing
Then I turned from the sun, and saw everyone searching
The hoot owl and his song will bring you along
Where else on earth would you wanna go?
We can leave all this hate before it's too late
Why would we wanna come back at all?
Cobwebs on my pillow, I'm found in the willow
I'd spend my whole life sleeping
To be called by noon is to be called too soon today
The storm is passed, there is peace at last
I'll spend my whole life sleeping
Now there's not a sound, no one to be found anywhere
The shepherd and his sheep, will wind you to sleep
Where else on earth would you wanna go?
To a land of wonder, when you go under
Why would we want to come back at all?
Tomorrow at 1.30pm I'll be doing an Instagram live chat with singer-songwriter and music producer @matroberts_ . ✅
We'll be talking all things songwriting and live performance. Send me a DM if you have any questions you would like us to answer.

Reading "Stage Fright: 40 Stars Tell You How They Beat America's #1 Fear" by Mick Berry and Michael R. Edelstein
Hear Maya Angelou on stage fright: “Accept it; don’t fight it.” My mother used to tell me, “If you’re afraid,
tell yourself you’re afraid.” She said, “When a snake approaches a bird,
the bird—if it knew it was afraid—could fly above the snake in a second.
But the bird doesn’t say to itself, ‘I’m afraid.’ It just allows itself to be
paralyzed.” I think this is true for a performer. What he or she should do is say,
“I’m nervous as the dickens. I’m as nervous as I can be. And I’m going to
say this piece.” That’s better than trying to ignore it." #stagefright
