BACK STORY || Read on for a radical story by @ibreathewater After a week without seeing a halibut, we arrived to our spot and @loganimlach had a hundred pound fish aboard within minutes. I jumped in the water, swam up current, did a calm breathe up and made a dive. Slowly skirting the bottom, my @riffe_internationalMarauder 47 at the ready, I looked to my right and saw a massive bulging frog eye staring at me. As my eyes adjusted I saw what I believed it was a 60 pound halibut. I lined up the shot, hoping for the brain, but knowing most fisherman take firearms aboard their boats to dispatch these creatures, I just put my shaft down through his eye, my double flopper shaft fully penetrating the beast. He then lifted off the bottom in a contrail of silt. I immediately knew that the fish was far bigger than I’d previously believed, taking out reel line as I surfaced. Kicking my guts out, I pulled hard, gaining inches of line at a time. Because I had unicorned the halibut, and knowing that my shaft was going to be toast regardless, I used the leverage of the unicorn shot to continually pull his nose upward towards the surface, hoisting as I swam. I eventually got him just within reach, but the fish bolted on an explosive second run. Exhaustion was already setting in as I continually kicked forward hoisting the fish to the surface, this time getting my hand on the spear shaft and thrusting my Riffe knife multiple times into his head. That just seemed to piss him off more and downward he swam again. After two or three more rounds of this, the fish seemed more fatigued than I was, seemingly silenced by a final blow of my knife in between his eyes. Sheathing my knife, I gripped his gills, my arm elbow deep under his cheek plates. Suddenly the gill plate clamped down on my arm. “Oh crap” I thought just as the fish revived and beat me up. I bear hugged the fish tightly, swimming up current (our fight taking us well past the anchored boat) breathing heavily and fighting both the current and the dense weight of this air bladder-less fish. I was gassed, but with a final heave and a hoist of the gaff by my friends, the fish was landed. Victory yells ensued.

The Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world. It encompasses over 10,000 square kilometers. And when they say flat, they mean it with only a 1 meter elevation change over the entire plane. The only speck on the horizon is this cactus island. A reminder that this area was once a lake that was inhabited with life some 11,000 years ago
