After an amazing long weekend celebrating my son’s 6th birthday, I’m back on the wagon with a late night Pilates class. It was just what I needed! I’m really starting to enjoy Pilates and the different benefits it brings to my mind and body vs. running. It is really starting to feel like the missing piece to my fitness routine.

When she spoke these words I was taken back by surprise and actually really proud of myself. I spent the majority of my life lurking in the shadows. My whole dance career I was outshined by others. I felt like everyone else was a better dancer, prettier, had more style ( which was really important in the dance world sad as it is )
And those feelings have always kind of stuck around.
But as I’m getting further into my 40’s I just realise having negative thoughts about myself is a waste of my precious time. And building confidence is like strengthening a muscle. The more you push through the uncomfortable situations the easier it becomes. I filmed today’s workout for my challenge and I struggled like hell through this. I contemplated scrapping it and doing something that made me look a bit better, before I realised what a dumb idea that was.
We all have strengths in fitness and life, we all have weakness. We are human. It’s ok to be not so good at something but what’s important is that you try.
And keep on trying!

One of my favorite exercises on the Hard Roller is the Supine Balance Series.
In this picture the dancer is performing the first exercise of the series, the “2-point balance”. The Hard Roller provides a lot of feed back letting you know what area of your abs need strengthening. It also helps the dancer understand the organization of the “magnets”. If the magnets ( ankles, knees, inner thighs) aren’t engaging then one will simply just roll off the roller.
An option for this exercise is adding the hand to knee contact to help provide more balance.
Why is this exercise so beneficial? As dancers, when we are trying to find any type of balance, if the magnets are not engaged that’s when we fall out of things.
Try doing this exercise, and then standing in your passé on relevé! If you fall off the roller, chances are you are falling out of your turns. But if you can find stability on the roller, then you will find stability when you go to do your pirouette!
