Pop Rock / Heartland Rock / Synth Rock
#nowspinning 🎧Nina Simone, Mood Indigo The Complete Bethlehem Singles.
Some artists spend years finding their way through the record-making process, learning how to make their music communicate on tape. But from the first moment Nina Simone sat down at the piano at New York City's Belltone Studios in December 1958, she clearly knew exactly what she wanted to do. And her instincts were flawless, Simone followed many creative paths over the course of her career, but her first sessions for Bethlehem Records were the work of a gifted and supremely confident artist, one whose craft was superb and whose style was striking and individual. In a single day, Simone cut 14 songs that sealed her reputation as one of the top jazz artists of her day, playing a set that wove the melodic and technical precision of classical music with the emotional honesty of blues. While 11 of the tracks would appear on Simone's first album (alternately titled Nina Simone and Little Girl Blue) and would go on to pop up on countless compilations and budget-price reissues after the Bethlehem catalog was sold, all 14 songs were issued on singles, and those original discs are the basis of this 2018 classic collection.🌷

Comin’ atcha with the funk! I’m in love with this pressing! Especially since it’s a double LP! Check out the artwork too! The colors are amazing!
It's off to Minnesota tonight. Nothing but some solid Minnesotan garage for the ears. I appreciate the effort some of these labels make to dig up tracks from bands that really only got exposure in the towns they were from. This is one of those efforts. From such well named groups as The Unbelievable Uglies, Leaves Of Grass, Little Caesar & The Conspirators (a real solid history homage that one) and the Yetti-Men come tracks like "Get Straight", "Crabs", "It Must Be Love" and "High Himalayas" respectively. A personal favorite of mine is "Silly Whim" by Jeannie, Jim, Tom, Bill. Yeah the group name is uninspired, but darn if the song doesn't rock well. Pretty simple, but it's got a good feeling. Well that and "Central High Playmate" from the Four Wheels cause it got that great Jan & Dean-ish vibe. Anyway, of to the land of 10,000 lakes for me.
Top Northern choon! Check it out this week on On Target.

The Simple Minds collection. Still miss an essential piece though, Don’t You (Forget About Me). It’s a banger.

Joni Mitchell - For The Roses
Asylum records 1972
After I posted “ Hot Rats,” I realized what it kind of reminds me of. It’s the title track from John Cale and Terry Riley’s “Church of Anthrax.” It’s also progressive, experimental, and has a definite groove. Admittedly, that’s about as far as the comparison goes, but it was a good excuse to listen to this album again. As for the rest of it, there’s quite a bit of diversity of song styles, from the folksy “The Soul of Patrick Lee” to the “The Hall of Mirrors in the Palace at Versailles” with its repetitive piano chords and Riley’s almost Moroccan-sounding saxophone.
Hello beautiful! Number 61 on my shelf from #rockyvotolato #abriefhistory. 1000 pressed on Purple or Yellow in 2008. Closing in on having one of every variant. Only a few more to go from a few releases. 💜💜💜

Roberto Nicolosi - L’Occhio Nel Labirinto (1973/2017, Four Flies Records)
Who loves an Italian horror film soundtrack, right? This, with its striking cover and lovingly pressed in glossy limited edition form by all round Good Police @fourfliesrecords, is a gloriously jazzy affair that features a trumpet in very much the vein of Miles Davis’ late 1960s period of electronic tinkering. It’s a horror soundtrack so there is spookiness and discord, of course. But, being Italian, it also has a groove and a swagger than one wouldn’t normally associate with a scary film. I have no idea what the film is like, or what it’s about, but I do know that this is a brilliant listen that works as a piece of art in its own right. Well worth a look.
(And, my word, Roberto really loved Miles’ In A Silent Way! If you do too, you’ll enjoy this.)
