“Greg and Michelle, Come in Greg and Michelle” we hear crackle over the CB radio. “Go ahead Brian” we quickly respond. “Alright so we’re going to be making a hard right up ahead into the woods, just be sure not to spin out the tires on the turn off - we don’t wanna leave any tracks into this spot, trying to keep it a little secret.” Brian coolly calls out ... Michelle looks over at me with an excited grin. I smile back at her and whisper “ah man, this is gonna be good.” And oh how good it was...
Just like Brian said, about a mile later he suddenly hooks a right directly into a dense patch of forest and their van immediately disappears into the woods. “All clear, hold onto some speed and come on up buddy” we hear over the CB. “Whelp, here goes nuthin’, hold on ladies!” I exclaim to Michelle and Casey Dog. The van bounced violently as we left the road and began parting thick brush deep into the seemingly impenetrable woods, threading our way between ancient trees set just wide enough for the rig to fit through...
Branches and limbs began scraping across the entire van, screeching and cracking, one found its way through the open rear window and grazed Casey’s head, which have her quite a scare at first. Then, just as quickly as we disappeared into the forest, Brian’s van reappeared, parked in a perfect little clearing complete with a small fire pit that they had built the very first time they camped there. Every rock in the exact same place they left it all those years ago...
It was simply magical — The fog crept slowly through the trees, the entire forest glistened and sparkled as the mist floated through the air and saturated this lush, remote, patch of wilderness. Every branch and rock elegantly draped with moss. The forest floor made invisible by thousands of shimmering ferns. The mood, the ambiance, the feel of the place was like something out of a fairytale or an ethereal dream...
As I parked the van Brian’s words echoed back through my mind and instantly made sense “I seriously hope I didn’t leave any tracks in” I thought nervously to myself. Because if there was ever a spot that was worth keeping “our little secret” this was certainly it...
Just a blonde female Australian trying to get by in a male dominated Moroccan world 🙋🏼♀️
What a culture shock. Day to day activities like walking into a cafe felt like entering a men’s club. At the markets questions or compliments about myself were spoken to nick. And to top it off, when checking in at a caravan park and asked for a passport mine was rejected as they only needed the ‘drivers’ of the vehicle. Safe to say I’m feeling very grateful to have been born and raised with the privilege and equality I have.
