On this day, 18 August 1572, the marriage of Marguerite de Valois and Henry of Navarre (future Henry IV of France) took place at Notre Dame Cathedral.
The match between Marguerite and Henry of Navarre, who was a Huguenot (French Calvinist Protestant), was arranged by Catherine de Medici. She hoped that this union would reunite family ties, as the Bourbons were part of the French royal family and the closes relatives of the Valois branch, and also to try and create harmony between Catholics and Huguenots. However, there were many who opposed the match and Pope Gregory XIII refused to grant a dispensation for the wedding. Despite that, the couple, both aged 19, was married on 18 August 1572 at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.
The different faiths of the bridal couple made for an unusual wedding service. The King of Navarre had to stay outside the cathedral during mass, and his place was taken by Marguerite's brother Henri, the Duke of Anjou. The anecdote that Marguerite was forced to marry the King of Navarre by her brother Charles IX who pushed down her head as though she were nodding her assent is an invention. It was invented by François Eudes de Mézeray, a 17th-century historian as Burbon propaganda to justify the subsequent annulment of the marriage, 27 years later.
Marguerite wrote of the wedding in her Memoirs: “I was set out in the most royal manner. I wore a crown on my head with the coët, or regal close dress of ermine, and I blazed in diamonds. My blue-coloured robe had a train to it of four ells in length, which was supported by three princesses. A platform had been raised, some height from the ground, which led from the Bishop's palace to the Church of Notre-Dame. It was huge with cloth of gold; and below it stood the people in throngs to view the procession, stifling with heat. We were received at the church door by the Cardinal de Bourbon, who officiated for that day, and pronounced the nuptial benediction. • continued •

Johannes Kleiman was born on this day in 1896. He was one of the helpers and Otto Frank’s right-hand man. It was Johannes, for instance, who came up with the plan of using the annex as a hiding place. To the people in hiding, his positivity and support were indispensable.
In her diary, Anne wrote: ‘Still, we have troubles, too; it's about Mr. Kleiman. As you know, we are all very fond of him, he is always cheerful and amazingly brave, although he is never well, has a lot of pain, and is not allowed to eat much or do much walking. “When Mr. Kleiman enters the room, the sun begins to shine!” Mummy said only recently, and she is quite right.’

#Repost@theismaili - #OnThisDay in 2007, Mawlana Hazar Imam commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Madrasa Programme in Mombasa, Kenya, an example of early childhood education for educators around the world.
The Madrasa Programme was launched at the request of East Africa’s leaders who wanted to improve the overall educational achievement of their children while at the same time promoting a secular, integrated curriculum based on the universal ethics and values of Islam and local cultural traditions. The Programme, however, takes a pluralistic, inclusive approach, embracing Muslim and non-Muslim children alike. Congratulations to Eliza McCartney (@eliza_mac_), who #onthisday won bronze in the Women's Pole Vault at the 2016 Olympic Games Rio de Janiero! McCartney currently holds both the New Zealand and Oceania records with a towering 4.94m. At 22 years of age, she has her sights set even higher... She's part of our #StandingontheShoulders exhibition. With a year to go until the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she's set a high bar which we've no doubt she'll cross.
ON THIS DAY IN HERSTORY: The 19th amendment to the Constitution of the United States was ratified on this day in 1920. Achieving this milestone was a long and arduous struggle - women organized, petitioned, marched, lobbied and practiced civil disobedience to reach what many considered a radical change to the Constitution.
It took activists and reformers nearly 100 years to win the right to vote.
Few early supporters lived to see the ratification of the 19th amendment. And sadly, the victory did not protect all women - legal barriers would prevent women of color from voting for years to come.

🌼 This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of Woodstock Music Festival, which took place August 15-18, 1969 in Bethel, New York and was attended by over 400,000 people. The last set of the weekend was a defining performance by Jimi Hendrix, which included a standout version of the Star Spangled Banner, a powerful performance and protest in the midst of the Vietnam War and directly following the Civil Rights movement. ✌🏾 #jimihendrix#onthisday#woodstock50
