The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association was founded in 1853, and was the first national historic preservation organization. Louisa Bird Cunningham inspired the creation of the organization when she wrote these words to her daughter, Ann Pamela Cunningham, after seeing the decrepit state of George Washington's home while traveling on the Potomac River:
"If the men of America have seen fit to allow the home of its most respected hero to go to ruin, why can't the women of America band together to save it?”
After that, Cunningham took it upon herself to challenge the nation to save Mount Vernon. She founded the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association in 1853 and by 1858 had raised $200,000 dollars to purchase the Mansion and 200 acres. The MVLA have been protecting & preserving Mount Vernon ever since. (📸: @slythrn_barnbum)
As part of this year's Book Week, Space2b is proudly hosting author Tess Sibbel (@tess_sibbel) for an in store reading of her new book 'Slow' on Tuesday 20th August at 4pm. George Zeo and Family derive from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They grew up in a musical family performing with their parents at churches and regional youth events. Their father would sing and sometimes play the spoons or harmonica, Their mom would sing and play the accordion, and Phillip and Georg would sing and play guitar. music was in the house, the car, and in their hearts. The Zeo family tradition continues as they gather every Sunday for dinner at “Grandmom” Zeo's house. Everyone brings their instruments and once again the house is filled with music. They are inspired by each other and those who listen They love to write, and perform as a family engaging with people. Their songwriting melds together a blend of Roots Music, Old-time Gospel, Blues, Rock and Roll, and Classic Country, resulting in a celebration of life and living. Since 2015 they’ve been writing and performing music that reflects the everyday experiences of life, love, passion, loss, hope, longing, good times, bad times and existential questioning.
