Twisted Sister- Stay Hungry (1984)
After reviewing a Christian album yesterday, I thought I’d go in the opposite direction for this edition of #metalmonday (or #hairmetalmonday if you prefer). This is also the first installment in a series I like to call “Albums My Mother Wouldn’t Let Me Have” 😂 The third record from Twisted Sister not only contains some of their biggest hits, but it provided one of the key moments in the forbidden soundtrack of my childhood. I’m speaking of course of the montage in Iron Eagle set to “We’re Not Gonna Take It”, when the young rabble rousers are preparing for their unauthorized military rescue mission. When I first heard that chorus, I finally had a voice for my angst and oppression, and I pumped my little 8-year old fist in solidarity. Growing up in a conservative religious household, of course bands like this were far too Satanic to be played in earshot of my mom, and that only added to their appeal. Now, as a bonafide grown up, not only can I buy these records and play them as loud as I want, I also have a greater appreciation for their musical integrity. The fact is, Dee Snider is a gifted songwriter, with hooks and arrangements that endure as some of the best in ‘80s metal. Additionally, Eddie “Fingers” Ojeda shredded on some tracks, and pulled back for more nuanced and slow yet intricate solos on others. Highlights from the album also include a pair of demonic concept tunes Snider referred to as the Horror-Teria, “Captain Howdy” and “Street Justice”. The former, named after the demon who possesses young Regan in The Exorcist, formed the basis for the murderous lead in Snider’s 1998 horror flick, Strangeland. Overall, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable work, full of catchy riffs and gleefully evil theatrics. I’m happy to oblige the inner sleeve’s instructions to PLAY IT LOUD, MUTHA! Just don’t tell my mom...

Busted out this late 2000s underground classic today:
Admiral Angry - Buster LP
Pink w/ Baby Blue Splatter
There was this short moment towards the end of the 2000s where bands like Black Sheep Wall, The Abominable Iron Sloth, Noriega and Admiral Angry made their modern, sludgy mark.
I particularly enjoyed Admiral Angry's take on that sound, which reminded me of almost equal parts of Will Haven, Eyehategod and Meshuggah.
The production of 'Buster' is whacky in the best possible way - especially the parts where the bass is set to total distortion overkill.
Those are largely reserved for the heaviest, Meshuggah-esque single note riffs, which just become ridiculously crushing thanks to that very bass tone.
At its best moments, 'Buster' simply levels everything in its way. Take the beginning of 'Specimen On' or just take it from the top, because every song has at least one of those pummeling parts.
I have a hard time deciding how well this album aged, because not all the riffs on 'Buster' are exactly golden, but when Admiral Angry get it right, you'll have a hard time not pulling an approving stank face.

Day 26 of the #mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator
"Mascot / Character Act / Stage Persona"
I guess no one fits better for this day than @ironmaiden's "Eddie". 🖤
The Band's longtime Mascot on Album Artworks as also Stage & Mechandise etc.
It's been nearly 30 years now since the Band & Eddie came into my life.
Up the Irons!
One of the mightiest symphonic black records I heard recently!
Totally crushing from start to finish.
This was my first experience with the band so I should check their previous releases... 💀

Dragged into Sunlight - Widowmaker
Quite a lot of people were taken aback when this came out as it’s a fair bit different than their landmark debut - Hatred for Mankind.
Melody and doom are pushed more to the forefront, while the black/death metal aspect takes a backseat. There’s a real sense of loss and melancholy interwoven throughout this album, which makes the crushing doom passages stand out ever more starkly.
The artwork is breathtaking as well - a really striking & unique style. All in all, absolutely phenomenal in every way in my opinion.
