Let’s talk altitude sickness ☕️
I came (perhaps overly) prepared for my sensi body to be a mess because of altitude sickness. Firstly when I began my research I discovered that Cusco is actually at a HIGHER altitude than Machu Picchu, so some people head straight the MP and work their way back to Cusco. 💡I began my journey in Quito, which was helpful, to ease in & to my surprise, I was actually doing well with all of the varying altitudes. A victim to headaches on the regular, my body adapted quickly. Just in case though, here are a few things I brought with me & a few quick tips - maybe they will help you should you ever reach the Picc. 👌
✔️hydration is key - obvious, but most of us don’t drink enough water. I started chugging before I even left for my trip. .
✔️tea - lots & lots. But if you’re like me, and sensi to caffeine, the coca tea will make you crazy. Instead opt for herbal teas (chamomile, green, etc.) .
✔️chlorophyll (I bought mint flavoured to add to water) .
✔️ b12 spray - helps increase red blood cells and flow of oxygen in your body (spray under tongue) .
✔️ibuprofen/feverfew - I took small doses of Ibu to help the first few days. Reduced inflammation and headaches. Feverfew is a natural supplement used for migraines, so I added that if needed. .
✔️ coldfx immune support chewsables - I took a few or these yummies before my trip and during to keep my immune system in check .
✔️ electrolytes - I brought some packets to add to water to keep my body happy. .
✔️ carbs - they help stomach all these extras. Celiacs like me can stick to rice & potatoes to soak it all up. .
✔️ green juice - so many shops now offer green juice. Stay away from the sugary options and stick to the veggies .
✔️ rest - as much as you need. Sleep it off, take siestas when needed. .
✨ I know that is A LOT, but I did tons of research and didn’t want the altitude to impact my trip. Rest and liquids are key, the rest will just give you an extra boost. .
