Just like the sun rises (brighter and longer days) in Makara Rashi,
the same way we wish you health and prosperity!
One of the regrets with my travel. Should have stayed back in India for few more days and headed to Alanganallur to watch #Jallikattu2020. Told my family to book tickets after Pongal so the family can celebrate it in India. They got to do Pongal celebrations & watch Lohri too.
A joyful evening all together in LOHRI celebrations (as a part of EBSB programme)at #iithyderabad

Pongal is a hugely popular harvest festival celebrated in South India, especially in the states Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu!
The word Pongal means “spilling over” which signifies abundance and prosperity.✨
🌴The whole Tamil population celebrate it without any differences and Therefore it is also known as "Tamil Thai Pongal" or the "Festival of the Tamils".
The four-day festival is celebrated each year around mid-January and is dedicated to the Hindu Sun God, and corresponds to Maker sankranti. This year, Pongal is being celebrated from January 14 to 18, 2020!✨
The festival marks the end of winter solstice, and the start of the sun’s six-month-long journey northwards when the sun enters the zodiac Makara (Capricorn).
To mark the festival, the Pongal sweet dish is prepared, first offered to the goddess Pongal, followed with an offering to cows, and then shared by the family. Festive celebrations include decorating cows and their horns, ritual bathing and processions. It is an occasion for decorating rice-powder based kolam artworks, offering prayers in the home and temples.from surviving the cold winters to moving towards the livelier season of spring, harvest festivals like Lohri, Bihu, Pongal are celebrated in various parts of India. From eating special food to celebrating it all night with dance and bonfire the festival not only marks the beginning of an auspicious year but also brings the family together. This festival is celebrated by one and all as it is non-relevance to any particular religious faith.
Overall, it is a festival to encourage social cohesiveness and unite people by bringing them together in a common function!

Happy (belated) Makara Shankranthi, Pongal and Lohri to all who celebrate (and are still celebrating)! ✨ This is our first festival of the year & I had full intentions of celebrating it, as closely as possible to how we celebrated back home in India when I was a kid. But, it so happened that I couldn't even so much as shower on the day of the festival. I have been down with Flu the last couple of days, woke up with terrible cold chills the other night & none of these medicines seem to help 🤷🏻♀️ All this while the little one is still sick, & we are all stuck at home thanks to the snow, day 4 & counting 😢
The hubs (between his day packed with back to back meetings) & I (between whatever the heck is happening with me and work that I finally had to put off) are taking turns looking after our little one. A wants to snuggle with me (while he showers equal amount of love on both dada and mama at other times becomes extremely partial and wants to be clingy and with me when sick) and I have to be stern with him and say no (cuz he doesn't understand why mama can't cuddle or kiss him, breaks my mama heart) 💔
So, yesterday I finally turned on my OOO after I got an earful from the hubs, 'you put your body through so much the last several months that it is craving for rest, you need to give it that, be ok with not working for a few days until you recover. Work will pile up, yes, but you can't go on like this'. I can't even go see a doc because we can't even make it past our driveway. I officially hate snow in PNW (this side of the country is not one bit prepared for snow-life, everything comes to a stand still with just a few inches of snow)! ❄️ ❌
And did I mention that our washing machine isn't working since we got back from vacay, had to get someone to take a look this week but that ain't happening until this snow melts 😥 Now there's at least 3 rounds of laundry to do. All of this while I did everything over the weekend to ensure we had a smooth-sailing week! Oh well, some weeks just kick your behind! 😤
But we won't give in, will celebrate once we recover, for now throwback to our little one's first Shankranthi, one that will always be dear to my heart 💞
🌾Our wholesome MakaraSankranti meal🌾
Sihi huggi | sweet Pongal
Kara huggi | savory Pongal
Ellu bella | Sankranti trial mix( mixature of sesame seeds, jaggery, dry coconut, peanuts and roasted gram)
Sakkare acchu (Homemade sugar candy)
Cooked shelled peanuts and Hyacinth beans (kadalekai and Avarekai)
Food prepared for this festival is not only delicious but also rich in antioxidants, keeps body warm in winter and prevent the viral attack (winter is the time for virus and bacteria to breed, can cause illness). This meal is totally a power house of nutrients.
Hope you all had a lovely festival day💕

Sweet Pongal Recipe: 👉🏼 Wash the 1/2 cup rice and 1/2 cup moong dal in clean water and completely strain the water. Add rice & dal to cooker and saute till the water evaporates, now add 1 tbsp ghee and saute for a minute or until it turns aromatic. Pressure-cook this with 2 1/2 cup water until soft and mushy. In another pan melt 3/4 cup melted powdered jaggery with 1/4 water & strain it & boil once again till slightly thick. Add cooked rice & dal mixture, 1 tsp cardamom powder, 2 tbsp finely grated coconut & 2 tbsp ghee to jaggery pan. Cook on medium flame until both blend well. Turn off the flame. Heat 2 tbsp ghee in a seasoning pan, roast few cashew nuts, raisins, until brown & pour this over the rice mixture. .
