Last year, I stumbled across an article that has been at the front of my mind ever since.
It’s called ‘Mexico Diaries’, written by Emily Brugman. The article explores the famous quote by novelist Jeffery Eugenides; “Emotions, in my experience, aren’t covered by single words. I don’t believe in “sadness,” “joy,” or “regret,” ... I’d like to have at my disposal complicated hybrid emotions, Germanic train-car constructions like, say, “the happiness that attends disaster.” Emily then continues on to explain how the hybrid emotion “the happiness that attends disaster” came to her mind when she thought about a then recent surf trip she took to Mexico, after there had been countless horrific earthquakes causing major devastation on land, and on the other hand created beautiful swell at sea bringing with it an electric thrill in the air amongst surfers.
Last night when I was stood photographing @idlesband , that article and that quote circled and circled my mind.
We’re still heavily amongst one of the weirdest and most fucked up times in the U.K. AND worldwide, yet without those countless heartbreaking elements of misery and disaster over this past decade, I can’t help but think that this incredible band would not be stood before us with the rage, the strength, the empowerment, the vulnerability, the gateway for connection, the voice, the beauty and the music WE ALL NEED.
@idlesband you are that exact happiness that attended disaster, the happiness that our fucked up nationwide political Britain gave birth to, and my oh my what a beautiful, precious and legendary BABE YOU ARE 🤘🏼

My first showcase🎤 with @theonyxband was a success. Smitty wasn’t aware of this awkward selfie with him in it...but the glow on those bongos ✨
