I love Patrick Wilson. I think I landed here because the boyfriend and I caught Annabelle Comes Home and were wholesale disappointed at the lack of big Pat in our lives and in our film. This led to a meandering discussion about what makes The Conjuring universe so compelling, which then lead to a heart to heart between us about how much we loved Patrick Wilson in basically everything he's ever done in his life. In short, we are a Patrick Wilson supporting household. We stan.
Hard Candy is another movie which is on my list but not high enough to ever be considered, given it is definitely going to be a weird time and also I hate Ellen Page. We are an Ellen Page not supporting household also. That dynamic is weird given the subject matter and the characters Page and Wilson play because my heart is rooting for Patrick because we stan, but it's rooting against his character in a big way, because that's just messed up to do otherwise. Hard Candy is an uncomfortable watch, the first twenty or so minutes are so unnerving that I was squirming in my seat at how gross it felt. I felt like an unwilling voyeur watching Wilson stalk his seemingly helpless and innocent prey. This will spoil things so don't read on if you've not seen it because the joy is in the story itself, but the dynamic is upset somewhat and that makes for an interesting watch. It's quite unlike most mainstream movies in that the predator is not our stronger, pervert male who is praying on a vulnerable young women or girl. It is basically the polar opposite of rape/revenge movies in that regard as our heroine/anti hero Page turns the tables, refusing to allow herself to be the next victim. Now, excessive violence and punishment of this level and degree is of course awful to contemplate, and you'd have to be sick to be rooting for Page to go through with what she threatens to do, but I won't lie either. To see a male subjected to the vulnerability that is often written for females exclusively, and be taunted and manipulated by a teenage girl was weirdly satisfying to watch.
