My obsession with headshots is quickly turning into an obsession with directing and storytelling as well. It was always there but more recently I’ve been focusing even more on atmosphere and laying the groundwork for actors to access ideas and intention more smoothly while shooting. Setting it up like a scene where we can flow through moments and ideas. It’s really exciting!
Having a plan and then leaving room for the unexpected is the key. As actors and storytellers we feel like we need to control everything. I struggled with this a lot in my acting days, feeling like I had to be something rather than just being and trusting. And my first few years into headshot photography I felt like I had to copy the top headshot photographers to do well. But after getting really fed up with that I broke away and started experimenting with things and finding my own way— that’s when things really shifted and started coming together.
Lighting ideas started to just magically work out — opening the door to start focusing more on creating the frame work of how to walk an actor through a headshot session — helping them to feel relaxed, powerful and creative rather than stressed, confused and disconnected.
How can you jump off the rails in your field and start exploring new ways of creating?
This is the lovely @indiasheaa who connected to all the moments. Thanks India! Makeup: @jennifervegamakeup

... It is the photographer, not the camera - that is the instrument... ****************************

It’s that time of year again... headshot season 🎞 To be completely transparent, I typically loathe getting my headshots taken. But this time around I enlisted the help of my dear friend and fellow thespian, @martinspanjers to shoot, and actually left feeling pretty happy. (It’s helps to work with people you already adore!) We shot for over 2 hours, with several looks, (even a couple fun, insta-worthy shots like this one ☝️), his rate is affordable, and includes two retouches. If you need new headshots for #pilotseason, shoot him a DM!
Art I did a few days ago. I'm tired.
It's based of a character from my friend George's story.
Is it possible to get 10 hours of sleep but still be tired?
I haven't been posting a lot at the moment it's all for good reason, I've been so busy!
I've been honoured that so many talented actors have been approaching me to take their head shot photos. Working with actors is such a great experience for a portrait photographer, being able to capture such a wide range of emotions and nuance is such a treat and I enjoy every second of it!
If you are an actor looking for some headshots or are looking for a portrait session more bespoke to your needs then do get in touch! I have limited availability for the rest of the year (how quickly has this year gone?) and would love to get you booked in!
Have a fantastic Tuesday. ♥️🥰 Model: @gemmahreynolds such a talented actress. I'm looking forward to seeing her performance in @andthentheycameforme later this month!
How my business branding sessions tend to go: bundles of laughter 🙈
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (louder, for the people at the back): when you’re investing in a small business, people aren’t just investing in your product or service, they’re investing in YOU. Francesca knows all about this, as she is a wedding celebrant, and she invests (have I said that word too many times yet? Probably!) in her clients just as much as they do in her!
I first met Francesca at a wedding earlier this year, in fact, she was the first celebrant I’d ever met. A celebrant is a little different to a vicar or a registrar, in that they story-tell when they help you make your vows, verbalise your ceremony, or attend your event. Francesca particularly spends a good deal of time with her cup of tea in hand, writing down notes during her client meetings before typing them all up into the most personalised, wonderful words. Like me, she has to get to know her clients. Their stories. What makes them tick... So that she can write something perfectly suited to them. She is a true literary artist, and her energy is so wonderful! Infectiously friendly and wonderful, we bounced off of one another, and it was easy to see why people would pick her to be a part of their special event! She’s just such a lovely soul!
But the problem? Francesca didn’t have many photos of her being, well, her! So we took some time at Hylands Park to create some media magic. She now has a full gallery (complete with outfit changes) chock full of all the photos she might need for her exciting next year in business. From formal photos, to casual photos (I just love this first one), to photos of her doing her thing, to more headshot, corporate style photos, which will be perfect if she expands her business into more serious roles and needs something a little less light hearted. We had so much fun though, and I really do love the results! Thank you Francesca for booking me for your branding photos, I loved seeing you again! 💜
