This instrument is the Bandura, the national Ukrainian instrument.
The use of lute-like stringed instruments by Ukrainians dates back to 591. And there are iconographic depictions of lute-like instruments in the 11th-century frescoes of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev.

Sometimes, I find it helpful to only practice with one light on to minimize distractions. Am I the only one who does this? 😅
Last night’s solo recital at Concerts @100 Concert Series was amazing. It was my first opportunity to perform this entirely new program (to me, at least!) consisting of music totalling around an hour and a half. The most athletic program I’ve presented to date. I loved meeting new audiences members, exchanging thoughts on the music I played for them, and chatting about our favourite artists. Today, I was strategizing how to pace myself better for my other two recitals because it can be easy to exhaust oneself prior to the last piece on the program. Fortunately, Carmen Fantasy was a smash. Much to improve on during next week’s rehearsals with piano....🤩

The harp community has lost another icon with the passing of Louise Trotter. "It has taken me a long time to realize that there comes a time when you quit playing notes and begin to play music," she told us in our 2004 feature interview celebrating her Lifetime Achievement Award. Here’s how we introduced Trotter back then:
Louise Trotter is a rarity in the harp world: she is as well known for playing lever harp as she is for playing pedal. The lever harp world recognized Trotter last summer with their Lifetime Achievement Award, given for the first time ever in honor of the late lever harp innovator Robbie Robinson. Trotter has published a pile of music, recorded a number of CDs, and is a fixture at both pedal and lever harp conferences and workshops.
In her youth Trotter went from a dusty little Texas town, to New York City, then back to the Lone Star State to pursue her dream of studying and performing the harp. She has not had blinders on during her journey, though, and has made no secret about putting her family before the harp. In fact, she would not have it any other way. Despite her priorities—or maybe because of them—Trotter has become one of the most beloved figures in the harp world. She has a Texas-sized passion not only for harp music, but also for the people who create it. We spoke with her in January about her recent honor, her life as a harpist, and how she views the relationship between lever and pedal harpists in today's ever-growing harp society.

MUSIK TOKO KELONTONG
I just realise, that's how I do my job.
