5 THINGS I DID TO ELEVATE MY WORKOUTS🦄
I went through a 2 year period (2015-2016) of really tough marathons before I decided that things HAD to change to get different results.
Here are some things I focused on to go from marathon times of 3:47/3:39/3:38 ➡️3:11—
🦄STOP DOING THE SAME OL’ THING
I was so used to doing just a 5 mile tempo weekly. You can't do the exact same thing every week & expect big results. When I started going between shorter intervals & then longer ones- I started progressing a lot faster. The short fast stuff makes the longer stuff feel more relaxed and effortless.
🦄TOOK HARD WORKOUTS OFF TREADMILL
Treadmills have their place but I think for hard effort it's so important to not shortchange yourself on the effort. You need to KNOW you can propel yourself to those paces. I know now that I can self-regulate pace & when I'm tired & fatiguing, I've had practice finding pace again.
🦄HAVE MY MIND BE AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN WORKOUTS
If you are not using the power of your mind to be your encouraging coach in a workout, you're missing out. I don't just let my body do whatever it feels like doing, I encourage & push myself mentally & when the going gets tough- I don't give myself easy "outs." One of my fave elites said he doesn't have a coach because in a race there is no one to push you but yourself. Learn to tap into that mental sharpness & push. Use your mind as your ally.
🦄WILLING TO DO WORKOUTS THAT WERE MY WEAK SPOTS
Before I used to shy away from workouts that I didn't like- like super long tempos. But when the marathon comes around, you're not fooling anyone if you just play to your strengths in training. Those long tough workouts breed a strength & endurance that you can't get from the shorter stuff.
🦄CHECK IN ON FORM DURING WORKOUTS
Fatiguing usually means your form gets lazy, less efficient, & can slow you down even more- NOT helpful. Now I actively check in on my form- & usually going back to better form can help me to rally my pace. I'll remind myself to relax, throw my shoulders back, take small steps, keep my arms loose & forward lean!

18 days into the new year and I heard that yesterday was ditch your resolution day... I didn’t even know that was a thing.
I do know that I used to be one of those people. I’d set out with big goals and expectations and then quit the second I started doubting myself. My excuses would take over my mind and down the wormhole I’d go. -It’s the weekend, I’m too busy
-I already screwed up with pizza and beer, might as well restart Monday -I’ve been trying so hard the last few weeks and I’m not seeing any results. This isn’t worth it.
-It’s easy for her because she has the time and motivation, I don’t.
I quit on myself so many times you guys. I’d talk myself into believing that it is what it is and I’ll just have to learn to be comfortable with the way I am. That would work until that inner mean girl surfaced and I’d start up again.
Success is achieved by starting small and forming habits that will help you achieve your goals. Success doesn’t happen overnight, or in two weeks. It takes time, hard work, effort and giving yourself some freaking grace. So what you had pizza and beer, pick back up at your next meal with something that works towards your goals. It’s called balance. It’s called living.
I can’t meal prep for you.
I can’t press play for you.
I can’t promise you that it’ll be easy.
What I can do is promise you it’ll be worth it.
I can be your biggest cheerleader.
I can breath belief into you.
I can help you find a sustainable solution.
I can help you get started.
There’s never going to be the perfect time to start. That time is now, you’re worth it. Don’t let your excuses run your life for another day.
