Greek Gin Week 1/4
If you follow my stories, you know that recently i asked if you wanted to see a quick run/review on gins currently produced in Greece. Well, i got 35 "yes" so here we go... There are that many, 4! (Ok there is 1 more but... lets stay in these 4, shall we? 😅). Hopefully, more distilleries will get into it in the near future. There is some marketing going on for each of em and advertising but there is clearly room for improvement. Thought I ll just refer to them in alphabetical order.
Starting off with the most vague of em all
Started by a chemist, mr. Chariskos, in Xeropotamos (translates to "dry river") area, Drama, this small batch gin is produced using wild juniper, self-sown around the area and a variety of local herbs in a recipe that remains a secret (hence the vague). Everything is done via a pair of copper stills under multiple distillations and put into a nice black matte bottle. This is the general philosophy of the whole distillery, that is making the spirits using only local products, supporting the area and locals and giving unique results. It is mainly distributed in Northern Greece and some selected liquor shops all over Greece.
Now, am not your gin afficionado with years of knowledge in gin and/or hundreds of bottles tasted •(for such reviews you can check the ones tagged 😉)
•(heard begging for samples works??? 😂😂😂😂😂)
but i ll try giving you an idea on what to expect.
(Oh, and to leave no misconceptions, i bought every single one of em 😂😂 - ok, i ll stop now)
Nose is juniper forward, yet it doesnt totally take over, with earthy tones following and a sweet scent that i cant distinguish.
Palate is smooth and velvety with those earthy notes, probably angelica and orris roots, getting on par with juniper, ending with citrus peels and sage (?)
Leaves your mouth with a dry lingering aftertaste, ending with citrous peels.
Overall, i d say quite tasty and easy going with no sharp edges 😁
Hope you liked it 🙆♂️

❓What is your favourite gin bottle?❓
With the gin market booming with new gin brands, presentation is getting more attention and becoming more important than ever. While we’re all about the gin on the inside, we’re going to be superficial for a moment! If you could only pick one gin bottle in the world as the best looking bottle, what would it be!?
And we’re keen to hear your thoughts on whether spirits awards should include branding/presentation awards or focus on the spirit itself?
Here’s some inspiration with popular favourites from @ealingdistillery, @mataroagin, @upperhand_gin, @isleofharrisdistillers, @panda.gin, @brentingbygin, @perfectcrimegin & @tinkture.

The Violett Fizz by @ginginginde⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- 5 cl gin (@haymansgin royal dock)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- 2 cl violet liqueur by @thebittertruthcompany⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- 3 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- 1 cl simple syrup⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Shake all with plenty of ice and double strain into a glass with more fresh ice. garnish as you like. Personally @ginginginde think a lemon zest makes for a great colour contrast.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
@ginginginde purchased the violet liqueur after having seen a magnificent shot from @thecocktail.blog and liked what he could do with it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This one has quite some zing with the 57 % ABV by the Hayman's Royal Dock gin. Like it!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cheers and Ginsalabim 🍸⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Before there was craft gin, juniper infused Klekovača, gave Serbs their share of this healthy herb. Klekovače, especially from Western Serbia is considered one of the best rakijas around, so all you gin-enthusiasts need to give it a try.

Greek Gin Week 2/4
2nd in line and my current favourite
Have talked about this one in the past but here we go again. Made by 3 Greek women in Evoia and launched in 2017, this is a gin that can charm anyone. Base spirit is initially flavored with juniper berries, angelica root, orris root, lemon peels, orange peels, cardamom, corriander and cassia bark. Afterwards, via vapor infusion, they further add schinos, myrtle leaves, orange blossom, critamos (rock samphire) and pink pepper. Lastly, they apply a smooth, light filtering method giving a 45.7% abv gin, which you can find inside such a nice looking bottle.
Nose is juniper forward, with critamos embracing it all way long, with hints of myrtle, giving you a maritime feeling which is sensational!
Palate is intense, oily and fresh and follows the nose with juniper and critamos playing same role again, getting some delicate earthy notes towards the end.
Lingering aftertaste with some interesting spicy notes.
While it is nice with various tonics, in my opinion, fevertree mediterannean enhances it like no other.
If i got your attention, you ll be happy to find out that besides Greece and Cyprus, you may find it in the USA, UK, Germany and Switzerland.
