#SomeGaysCanCatch but search #gaycricket on Instagram and you’ll see fewer than 100 posts come up. Playing cricket was a big part of my childhood and formed most of my identity through University and my early years in London, but being so steeped in normative masculinity ‘I can’t be gay, I play cricket’ was a very real thought that sat with me for years.
Whilst there are big efforts to grow the sport globally, with many major playing countries having homosexuality criminalised or taboo, growth is more of the same and isn’t diversifying the game. The LGBTQ+ community has been largely ignored, with Steve Davis the only player to thus far come out (2011) only feeling comfortable enough to do so after his international career, and has said how uncomfortable he felt at times on tour. There needs to be more support for brilliant clubs like @graces_cricket currently the only gay club in the world, in a similar way to that which has grown LGBTQ participation in rugby, football, badminton, tennis etc that have led to clubs like thriving and doing awesome work (some of which I’ve been lucky to be a part of – thanks @kxsrfc@goslingslondon and @outplaysquash!). @EnglandCricket is doing some great work in the sport, but whilst watching the wonderful World Cup win it made me also realise there are areas they, and the @ICC on a world level are failing, and leading to a lack of LGBTQ+ participation in the sport, and the stereotype that #gayscantcatch. You know what? Given the chance some are bloody good at it.
This pic was taken by @shabang1989 on a wonderful tour with some of my awesome old Uni pals – who have been super supportive of being gay. @denton1989@neily19 + more, Great lads. We had a great time on the Isle of Wight, and after a fair time off I was pleased scoring 47, 28* and 34 (you can even see a shot or two if you swipe). Was fun putting on the gloves again too – I used to be a wicketkeeper by trade and was lucky to play at a reasonable standard. Here’s to next year Sussex Cougars CC!!
