When you get into the cycle of working for yourself you sometimes forget to give yourself breaks. Make sure to take time for yourself, eat lunch away from your desk, head out on walks, etc. even book it into your calendar to remind yourself to step away. 📷: @bumblebizz
A lot of people say they dislike using social media, but feel obliged to use it for professional reasons. I certainly thought I had to use Twitter for years, when it had a negligible impact on my professional opportunities.
So for anyone who feels that they *need* to be on consumer-facing social media for professional purposes (excluding LinkedIn), here are some questions to ask yourself: ⏰Does the time and effort spent on a platform yield results, or does it displace more important activities? (e.g. networking, applying for jobs, going to events) 💷Have you objectively had professional opportunities from the platform that you wouldn’t have been able to get elsewhere? If so, how valuable were they? 📈What’s the basic minimum that you can do to on the platform for you to be access it’s benefits, without it sucking you in? 💻Do you use it more for personal updates than professional ones? 🤔Do you have a strategy and a clear idea of your objectives and how you’ll achieve them on the platform? 🤖Can you use schedule posts in advance, so you don’t have to be on all the time?
While having a social media presence can be important, especially if you work in the creative or media industries, it’s also vital to be realistic about how effective it is for achieving your goals.
For anyone wanting to improve your #publicspeaking skills, one of the easiest ways to do that is to join your local #toastmasters club.
If you live in or near Central Oahu and would like to preview a club nearby, come to the #Mililani Toastmasters #Holiday Open House on Monday, December 16 at 7:30 p.m.
The Mililani Club meets at a convenient time for us #workingmoms, as it gives us enough time to pick up the kids from school and sports, get dinner ready, and then sit them down to eat. I normally try to get a few bites in before I leave for our weekly meeting on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m.
Toastmasters is a no-judgment, supportive environment to practice your #communication skills. It's nice because club members are all working toward similar goals to improve their #communication and #leadershipskills. Just by virtue of showing up there every week, I believe we share the same values of #personaldevelopment and #selfimprovement.
Is it hard to show up every Monday night? Hell yeah. But it's a commitment to becoming better, just a little bit, every single time I show up.
Come and visit us at our Holiday Open House--we'll have light refreshments, enjoy some fellowship, and watch our members work on improving their #speaking. You don't have to speak if you don't want to--you can just observe (your choice). We'd love for you to visit to see if our Club can help you reach your personal and professional goals in 2020.
P.S. Like the flyer? I designed it :)
