💯💯To all of you living YOUR life on YOUR terms! In this week’s podcast episode w @cglovinski I have a rant about the recent @nytimes article which talks about historical artistic genuis ie abusive & dismissive behaviors from male artists and the struggles women have inherited because of these “truths” about “artists”. I have been blown away by all the messages I’ve gotten from artists who have struggled with this as well. So to all of you who have struggled with it and have made choices to live YOUR life on YOUR terms, I applaud you! You are changing history! WARNING- ADULT LANGUAGE AHEAD! ⚠️ My first piece of embroidery I finished last week. It's taken me a while to sum up the inspiration behind this piece. Firstly, a few books I've read recently have highlighted to me how little I knew about my female body. But the thing is... I'm not alone. Even science doesn't really understand our bodies. Many many women have faced and still do face ludicrous persecution as a result of their potential ability to create life and the menstruating that comes with that. Our blood is labelled dirty, unclean and sinful. We are sold countless feminine 'hygiene' products, further adding to the idea that we are unclean. Even still, not many women can accept and talk about their experiences of womanhood or vulvas without cringing a little. Some are even offended at the sight of this. Some people cannot stand to even hear the word vulva... Yet dick, dickhead and dick drawings are funny and flung around much like the real thing.
This topic is so expansive it's impossible to cover in one post. But this is my homage to all the woman who have and still suffer in silence with period related disorders and pain which is dismissed as 'part of the deal'. I also felt the need to include references to Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale and The testaments. These books are incredible. But they feel so close to home when women's autonomy over their bodies is diminishing in America. We are reduced to our ability to create life. An amazing ability! It should be celebrated but instead it's something to be controlled by the law.
One last thing, the clitoris is golden. So many women have suffered mutilation as a result of possessing something that can give us pleasure. Our powers to create life and pleasure is unmeasurable. I can only hope one day that we are all seen as who we are than the contents of our sex hormones.
My inspirations are as follows:
1. Period Power- Maisie Hill
2. How the Pill Changes Everything - Dr Sarah E. Hill
3. The Evolution of Beauty- Richard O'Prum
4. Handmaid's Tale/The Testaments - Margaret Atwood
5. @jacqthestripper (for her outspokenness and courage to create authentic artwork)
6. The Scarlet Letter- Nathaniel Hawthorne
“I never thought of painting until 1926, when I was in bed on account of an automobile accident. I was bored as hell in bed with a plaster cast (I had a fracture in the spine and several in other places), so I decided to do something. I stole from my father some oil paints, and my mother ordered for me a special easel because I couldn’t sit up, and I started to paint.” How a bus accident inspired Frida Kahlo to become an artist 🎨

Bol k labh azaad hai tere,
Bol zabaa ab tak teri hai,
Tera sutwa jism hai tera,
Bol ki jaa ab tak teri hai.
This nazm by Faiz Sahb is so apt for current situation. I have always thought about the great responsibility Progressive writers have had during the time of partition. How brutally honest they were in writing the truth and patriotism. This is the story of an Indian who is a woman who follows Islam as her faith. You can’t expect her to be silent when all her life she has been defending her existence.
It’s not been easy for the past couple of years. Yes, you read right. Years.
Too much of hate, too much of blood and too much of silence has led us to shout out loud.
To more Bol k lab azaad hai tere.
What’s your intention for 2020? Sending you love and blessings from my creative vortex. I’m celebrating with introspection, reading a great book, journaling, painting and enjoying bleeding. My intention is to be my most authentic self. 💓
“We spent Valentines Day dissecting the deepest aspects of our codependent patterns that we thought we already worked through. Instead of chocolates and lingerie we opted for tears, anxiety and puking. That’s what spiritual healing looks like and I live for this shit because on the other side there’s ultimate freedom and unconditional Love that is our birth right.” 🖤✨ Click link in bio to read the rest of my blog.
