Cutting edge economics. Be part of it. #graduateschool#economics Posted @withregram • @levyecongrad The framework of the Levy Programs is in the work of Distinguished scholars Hyman P. It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters. -Epictetus
If anyone were to ever doubt the economic impact this pandemic is having on U.S. citizens, observe Exhibit A. This photo was captured yesterday as my daughter and I were leaving the Walgreens across the street from this predatory lender, Payday Loans in Gretna, LA. Maleah asked “Dad, why are there so many people standing outside of that place? They must be selling something real good.” I instantly replied, “All money ain’t good money Moja, but sometimes short-term needs outweigh longterm consequences.” Just to place this sobering sight into context, check out these quotes from Dan Freeman, CEO of Cash America. “The theory in the business is [that] you’ve got to get that customer in, work to turn him into a repetitive customer, long-term customer, because that’s really where the profitability is.” Here are few facts to go along with that. According to LABudget.org, a typical Louisiana borrower will need to take 9 payday loans each year to pay off their original debt, resulting in $270 in fees for a one-time $100 loan. The annual percentage rate for a payday loan in Louisiana is 780 percent, compared to an annual percentage rate of 24 percent for major credit cards.
This is not specific to Louisiana, nor is it specific to the South, but I do know that it is specific to folks who “ain’t got it like that”. Many of us know what that colloquialism means. For everyday Americans, this pandemic has been and will continue to have rippling economic effects, that won’t be easily solved. @reggieart warned us long ago that this would happen. One thing I do know is that not bailing out the American people, but bailing out companies worth billions isn’t right. I will pray for folks that have to do this to get by today and tomorrow, but I will also pray for the day when I have enough to make economic change that puts places like this one underneath the ground.
Pricing pollution to get people to pollute less shrilson. It’s called economics. We do it on all undesirable activities. Stop burning this stuff and build stuff with it or get out if the way for others.

Several weeks ago, investors around the world began to panic as oil prices fell to one of their lowest points in the past three decades. The price per barrel of Brent Crude, a type of oil that has historically served as a benchmark for oil prices, has fallen dramatically. While this may sound like great news for consumers, some experts are worrying about what this means for the economy as a whole. But how did all of this start?
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞?
Now that the coronavirus has impacted countries all around the world, economies have slowed down, meaning that the demand for oil has fallen rapidly. Continuing current levels of oil production without any intervention would lead to more oil being produced than what was in demand in the market. To address this problem, several weeks ago, the leaders of OPEC, as well as Russia, convened to discuss a possible plan of action. The Saudi Arabian government recommended that all of the countries cut down their levels of oil production, but this plan would have entailed Russia’s being one of the countries with the most curtailed oil production; Russia thus refused to participate in this plan. Russia’s reasoning cannot be pinpointed with certainty, but a very strong hypothesis is that the Russian government is disillusioned with the practice of cutting production of oil. Russian leaders have claimed that the United States benefitted unfairly from Russia and Saudi Arabia’s previous decisions to cut oil production. They argue that US energy companies used the latter two nations’ cuts in oil production as a springboard from which they increased their own production of oil and then sold it at the high price of the global benchmark set in part by other countries’ cuts.

Another one off the #pileofshame was #lastwill#boardgame published by @czech_games_edition and plays 2 to 5 in about an hour. The basic mechanisms are #workerplacement, #setcollection and #economics. Though the last is a bit if a stretch. The theme is unique and kinda like the movie Brewster's Millions. The story is your rich uncle has died and you are in a race with the other heirs to see who can loose their money the fastest. Winner inherits it all! Components are good quality. Artwork is good. No complaints on quality. We played it with two and had plenty of opportunity to accomplish what we wanted, well except I lost. I think with 5 it would overstay its welcome. We enjoyed it overall and are looking forward to trying #prodigalsclub next.

ECONOMICS, n. The study of choice in the face of scarcity.

We're living in a time of uncertainty, and it can be hard to see the positives - especially when there's no stability right now.
We've all got a million questions and nobody has the answers. It's such a strange state of limbo.
The life cycle of a butterfly is more relevant than ever now - the world was ticking along as a caterpillar, and now it's turned into a chrysalis.
All we can do now is wait and hope that the world will turn into something more beautiful - like a butterfly 🦋

Does 5G cause Coronavirus? Short answer is no. Long answer is as follows.
Myth 1: Wuhan was the first place in the world to get 5G in October last year, hence they were the first to get the new Coronavirus in November last year.
FALSE. South Korea was the first to get 5G in April last year. They did not have their first Covid case until 20 Jan this year. USA was the second country to get 5G in April also last year and they didn't have their first case until 20 Jan.Germany was the third country to get 5G in June last year and their first case wasn't until 27 Jan this year. China got 5G in October last year and Wuhan was only one of several cities in China to get 5G around this time. The COVID disease originated in Wuhan in November last year and the spread of the virus can be clearly tracked. If 5G was the cause, then we should see Covid cases appearing in the order that 5G was introduced. This is NOT the case, so there is NO temporal (time) association between 5G and Covid.
Myth 2: Covid only affects the countries that have 5G.
FALSE. There are 34 countries in the world with 5G networks. There are now 201 countries in the world with Covid cases. Iran is an example of a country where there is no 5G with a lot of Covid cases (45,000). So there is NO geographical association between 5G and Covid.
Myth 3: Countries with more 5G towers have more cases of Covid.
FALSE. South Korea has the highest number of cities (85) with 5G availability, yet their Covid outbreak is well controlled. This can be attributed to their aggressive early testing. USA on the other hand is a much larger country than Korea yet only has 50 cities with 5G availability, and their Covid outbreak is now the largest in the world. This can be attributed to poor management. So there is NO dose-response relationship between Covid and 5G.

This is why they use economics to be relavant.
