A great challenging drill that targets the abdominals, and more specifically the obliques.
✖️TIPS ON FORM✖️
1) In this video hands are in position 3 on the ends of the bars. Grip is light because we want the core doing the work.
2) Back stays straight, abs engaged, shoulders are down away from the ears, hips stay locked in the center over the frame as the upper body drops laterally. I like to cue riders to drop the elbow down towards the bars.
3) The rider goes into flexion at the hips as they drop the elbow down towards the bars. Elbows always stay in tight towards the side body.
4) The movement doesn’t have to big / aggressive. The most important thing is to control the upper body into the crunch while maintaining strength in the core.
Anytime the upper body moves laterally on a bike, the center of gravity is challenged. When riders feel uneasy or unsure about dropping into a lateral crunch they have a tendency to drop just the head laterally (thinking they’re dropping the upper body)... this puts a lot of strain and tension on the neck. The movement comes from the hips and elbows 😃 not the head.
Another common mistake is for riders to grip the bars with too much tension, which then sends unwanted tension into the hands, forearms, AND neck muscles. The purpose of a crunch is to primarily target the abdominals. When the bars are gripped too tightly, focus gets pulled away from the core. Remember to keep a light grip!
INSTRUCTORS >>> If you have a room full of newer riders, use a song with a lower BPM / slower beat. The song demonstrated in the video is a quicker, more advanced beat to take this drill at. So if you have predominantly newer riders in the room, slow down the BPM so they can master the movement 🙌🏼

I’ve been taking group fitness classes again for the first time in awhile and it feels goooood. Forgot how motivating it is to actually take class and not be the one teaching. @mojocyclingstudio thanks for an incredible class today! .
Classes are where I first found my passion for fitness(looking at you total body tone with Kelly @miamiuniversityfitness) and were what made me want to get certified in the first place. I wanted to be able to help others find the same passion and enjoyment from working out that I did.
If you’re ever unsure where to start on your fitness journey I HIGHLY recommend starting with a class. It can be an investment but you’ll learn form basics, take the guess work out of what exercises to do, and have a coach motivating you through the workout. Plus they’re FUN.
