#TBT This weekend I’m headed to the swim team alumni reunion at @grinnellcollege in Iowa where I went to school. ❤️🖤 I want to share a favorite memory from my first semester swimming there with @pioneerswimming in the fall of 2012. It was the first big invite meet of my college career. I was swimming breaststroke on the A relay, and I went slower than expected. I was terrified to go talk to my coaches Erin and Tim. Unfortunately some (not all) of my athletic experiences growing up taught me that poor performance=furious coach. So I went over to Erin (hiding behind my water bottle 😂) and just straight up asked “Are you mad?” Erin: “Why would i be mad?” Me: “Cause I swam slow.” Erin: “Well did you give 100%?” Me: “Yes of course!” Erin: “Maddy I’m never going to be mad as long as you just do your best.” Then she made some cheesy joke (as usual) which is why Tim is dying of laughter and I’m finally cracking a tiny smile. It meant the world to me to know that I had coaches that cared more about me as a person than they did about my athletic achievements. I began to move beyond just “win or lose” in sport and develop the values I emphasize in my triathlon career now: perseverance, gratitude, courage, and community to name a few. Surround yourself with people like this! Mentors, coaches, friends, business partners, family that care about YOU, not just your results, resume, social media, or what’s in it for them! It’s these people that bring out the best in you and help you grow! I certainly know I did in my 4 years at College.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally fine with being known as the photo girl. But there’s so much more I do. My undergrad was in business admin project management and my masters is in digital marketing and advertising. I run my own business, run social media and marketing for @gameonlu (that includes photo, design, analytics, strategic planning, & learning video), ran the video board for the season for @lynhillcats , run multiple businesses’ social media platforms, write, weight lift, box, volunteer coach little kids basketball, etc etc. I’m not saying this to say woah look at me but to say my dreams and goals are bigger than being the photo girl. I never want to fully put down a camera but I will ALWAYS want to keep learning and growing in new areas. It is sometimes hard to know what I’m defined as without a camera in my hand because for the past 9 years it has been a key part of my identity. However remembering my identity isn’t found in having a camera, my identity is found in Christ and that is a game changer. With or without my camera I want to change the world.
