How amazing is this little video that @nothingsrs shared with us of the making of her handmade 'Green Is The New Black' banner! And what an awesome little banner too, such a clever and creative design!
@nothingsrs is part of our #ecotattooingfamily and we've asked everyone whose part of the family to handmake their own banner to help raise awareness about #ecotattooing and the #climatecrisis, as well as show everyone that they are part of the solution!
There's such a cute story behind this banner too, but we'll save that for @nothingsrs to tell you in a future episode of I'm Saving It!
Thank you so much to all the Eco-Tattooing Family for putting so much energy into making these banners, they've all been so awesome and unique so far. Everyone seems to have really enjoyed making them too and I've loved hearing all your little banner making stories 🙏💚☺️.

Introducing... @lorella_doherty ❤️ ~ “TAKE AWAY THROW AWAYS. A campaign I am backing with all the love. Get onboard, share, sign, tag, check out @takeawaythrowaways”
Let’s talk about the #TrillionTrees Initiative. ⠀
I think we can all agree that trees are life. They literally produce oxygen that flows into our body which keeps us alive, and uptake carbon dioxide in the process. They are natural carbon removal machines, and they like other photosynthesizing organisms have a role to play in carbon mitigation. ⠀
Recently, planting a trillion trees has been floated as a solution to the #climatecrisis. In fact, House Republicans are really on board with this idea. And while it sounds like a solid, doable, relatively cheap mitigation strategy- we have to be mindful of the drawbacks. ⠀
For starters, even though House Republicans are endorsing planting trees, they are NOT coupling this initiative with emissions reductions. THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM. We cannot continue to burn fossil fuels and release carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere and expect our new trillion trees to “solve” the climate crisis. Solutions 👏🏾 MUST 👏🏾include 👏🏾 decarbonization. Planting trees is not enough on its own. ⠀
Although I agree natural solutions have a role to play, another huge question this initiative raises is- where would all these trees even go? Afforestation at that scale raises a lot of existing land use questions. We can’t simply and blindly plant a trillion trees without understanding how this would change existing ecosystems and societies- especially those that don’t need a massive influx of trees. We should actually start by helping indigenous peoples KEEP the trees that they’ve been protecting for centuries— I’m speaking directly about the deforestation in the Amazon. ⠀
This post is not to say that we shouldn’t plant trees. We should- but we have to understand the implications of afforestation and we certainly should not be developing our carbon sinks without cutting our carbon sources.
Bat soups alone didn’t do it. It’s population growth migrated to densely populated areas coupled with an increased appetite for western diets and animal protein that has created an ecosystem gone haywire.
The livestock population is made up of more than 20 billion animals (@worldwatchinstitute), whilst human population is only 7.5 billion. Just for a second, imagine the plethora of non recognized diseases out there awaiting to be awakened in a concoction of factory farm bacterial soup - not only from the mainland, but across the globe.
For the first time ever, we have data published by trusted academics highlighting this serious cause for concern. Now China’s potentials to turn our food system around is incalculable. The solutions are there. We just need serious conviction and the courage to lead us out of this mess, which truly begins with what food we decide to put on our tables.

🌊Approximately 8 million metric tons of plastics enter our ocean every year, and this is on top of the estimated 150 million metric tons that currently circulate our marine environments.⠀
Did you know that only 9 percent of all plastic waste EVER produced has been recycled? Only 9 percent!⠀
What happened to the rest of it you ask? Well, about 12 percent has been incinerated, while the rest (all 79 percent of it) has accumulated in landfills, dumps or the natural environment... like our oceans.⠀
Plastic waste, whether in a river, an ocean, or on land, can persist in the environment for centuries. The same properties that make plastics so useful, like their durability and resistance to degradation, also make them nearly impossible for nature to completely break down.⠀
And even before plastic makes its way to our oceans, where it can roam free and be eaten by a whale or snagged around a turtle's neck, it can clog sewers and provide a breeding grounds for mosquitoes and pests... which can increase the transmission of vector-borne diseases like malaria.⠀
Since the 1950s, the rate of plastic production has grown faster than that of any other material.⠀
If current trends continue, our oceans could contain more plastic than fish, by weight, by 2050. And the shift away from the production of durable plastics towards plastics that are meant to be thrown away after a single use, aka "single-use plastics" or SUPs, is a major reason for this increased rate of production.⠀
So what can you do? Identify what types of SUPs you use the most, maybe it's plastic straws or maybe it's plastic cutlery and styrofoam plates. Whatever it is, you'll figure it out when you audit your waste... trust us "auditing" can be more fun that it sounds!⠀
You need to do an audit because you need to fully understand your plastic problem, so that you can create a practical solution to move forward, do better, and do your part!⠀

While we've all been justifiably focused on fire in the past 6 months, there's a related but less visible disaster unfolding in the form of extreme drought stresses on the environment. This whole hillside near Uriarra is experiencing widespread tree dieback (note the orange foliage). There are countless places around Canberra where you can see this, including Mt Ainslie and Black Mountain. While we've had some rain, the effects of this drought will be felt ecologically for years to come.

Why should we care about climate change? That's a fair question. It may seem as though we do not face severe impacts of climate change yet. But that is a luxury some of us have, of being less climate vulnerable. .
To truly grasp the issue, we need to understand the term "climate vulnerability." Our inability to cope, adapt &/or keep up with the changing climate and it's several impacts makes us susceptible to these changes. Depending on where you live, which social strata you belong to and the resources you have access to, you can either be less, moderately or severely vulnerable to climate change. Vulnerability extends to people, cities, countries, biomes and the entire planet. .
Now, why is it important for us to use vulnerability as a lens to look at climate change? The world has innumerable political, social and economic issues. People facing these issues first hand end up most vulnerable to climate change and the effects they face due to the same inturn make them further vulnerable creating a vicious cycle. This is the reason for looking at climate change from a human dimension. Addressing poverty, global health issues and the need for better infrastructure can help reduce the vulnerability of people. Only then can we move on to larger systemic changes such as reducing emissions as a whole, thus cutting the problem at its root. ----------------------------------------------------
Have you ever faced the effects of climate change first hand? Do you think you're less or highly vulnerable to climate change? Tell us in the comments section! .
Concerned for his two sweet grandchildren, Stephane, 80, told us "climate change has robbed us of the rains that used to feed our families. If you look around now, many people are afraid to sow in the fields because we haven’t received proper rains and the prospects of receiving good rains seem very unlikely."
Zimbabwe is facing a wide range of humanitarian challenges as a result of effects from climate change and economic shocks.
The country is one of the hardest hit with food shortages in the Southern African region with 7.7 people - almost 50 percent of the country’s population - at risk of starvation.

Buying less doesn’t mean having less fun!🤘🏼⠀
There seems to be this false equivalency between living more sustainably and having less fun. For me, this couldn’t be further from the truth! Just because I’ve made some simple swaps in my diet and lifestyle doesn’t mean I feel limited in the way I’m able to enjoy life. In fact, I feel the opposite!🥳⠀
The more I slow down and reconnect with the natural world around me, the more present and joyful I am able to be on a daily basis. Buying new things feels good in the moment, but the long term benefit of creating a sharing economy with friends, asking ourselves why we want that new item to begin with, or looking for the perfect second-hand piece is far more rewarding. It’s all about perspective!⠀

Horns Rev 2 is an offshore wind farm off the Danish coast, in the North Sea. It consists of 91 Siemens Wind Power SWT 2.2-9.3 wind turbines, with a total generating capacity of 209 MW.
Normally, the wakes downstream of wind turbines are invisible, but sometimes, like in this photo from 25 January 2016, the turbines leave long, foggy wakes. This happens when there is a fog layer at the surface, 1-2m deep. The atmospheric turbulence in the wake of the turbines mixes the foggy air with the air above it and, if the conditions are right, produces a foggy wake.
