For the kids who strike: collective action is the only way to change the status quo, respect! Excerpts from #GeorgeMonbiot article in the Guardian: "Every day at home, we tell you that if you make a mess you should clear it up. We tell you that you should take responsibility for your own lives. But we have failed to apply these principles to ourselves. We walk away from the mess we have made, in the hope that you might clear it up.
Some of us did try. We sought to inspire our own generations to do what you are doing. But on the whole we were met with frowns and shrugs. For years, many people of my age denied there was a problem. They denied that climate breakdown was happening. They denied that extinction was happening. They denied that the world’s living systems were collapsing.
They denied all this because accepting it meant questioning everything they believed to be good. If the science was right, their car could not be right. If the science was right, their foreign holiday could not be right. Economic growth, rising consumption, the entire system they had been brought up to believe was right, had to be wrong. It was easier to pretend that the science was wrong and their lives were right than to accept that the science was right and their lives were wrong.
A few years ago, something shifted. Instead of denying the science, I heard the same people say, “OK, it’s real. But now it’s too late to do anything about it.” Between their denial and their despair, there was not one moment at which they said, “It is real, so we must act.” Their despair was another form of denial; another way of persuading themselves that they could carry on as before. If there was no point in acting, they had no need to challenge their deepest beliefs. Because of the denial, the selfishness, the short-termism of my generation, this is now the last chance we have".
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”. I believe it is safe to say if the great late MLK Jr. was with us today he would be appalled that with even how far we’ve come we still have people in this country who want to return to the 50s and keep racism, prejudice, and hate at the forefront of society. We’re so divided we can’t even look at a video and decide what is the #truth#nathanphillips#nicksandmann sad times for our country but in tribute to a fine man and his #remarkable#legacy perhaps we can find a way to talk / tweet / attack less, listen and love more. Nobody is saying you have to agree with everything your neighbor is saying but just hear them out, listen to an opposing voice / opinion and maybe just maybe we can all learn to co-exist. 🙏🏽💙🙏🏽. #happymlkday#mlk#greatman#greatleader#civildisobedience#truecharacter#truehero

I’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the realities of climate change, and was feeling paralysed by the enormity of what we’re facing.
I’ve been making these little people for about a year now, they all have a worried expression and I’ve been holding back, not sure what to do with them. But now it’s clear - they’re scared about global warming!
I’m still working on the final designs but they will each have a placard, and I will donate 20% of all profits from sales of them to @greenpeace@friends_earth and @extinctionrebellion
So, let me know if you like the idea and if you might want your own mini activist.
It’s time to get real about climate change - join a protest group, go on a demonstration, encourage your children to participate in the school walk-out on March 15th.
We can effect change if we work together.

Extinction Rebellion - the view from the big pink boat during perhaps my favourite gig I’ve ever done - occupying the middle of Oxford Circus with humans and collective power... the sun setting down Oxford Street and not a car in sight. This was Monday night... the Rebellion rolls on and outwards

Martin Luther King Jr. " There is nothing wrong with a traffic law which says you have to stop for a red light. But when a fire is raging, the fire truck goes right through that red light, and normal traffic had better get out of its way. Or, when a man is bleeding to death, the ambulance goes through those red lights at top speed. ... Disinherited people all over the world are bleeding to death from deep social and economic wounds. They need brigades of ambulance drivers who will have to ignore the red lights of the present system until the emergency is solved. Massive civil disobedience is a strategy for social change which is at least as forceful as an ambulance with its siren on full."

💔 "One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws." - MLK .
During this action on Monday peaceful civil disobedience was practised, because rules have no use if they are merely there to sustain oppression. Laws mean little if they are only in place to allow those in power to do whatever they want to those who have no power and are given no right to choose. .
It has always been this way, and it still applies: laws tell us nothing about how ethical something is. Legality and morality do not necessarily correlate. According to the law, the immense suffering we witnessed in this place is okay. According to the law, every single being in this farm is an object. Every single piglet dying in there from disease, dehydration, wounds or other affliction is nothing but a little "financial loss." According to the law they essentially have no rights at all, and it is legal to let them suffer, kill them or just leave them to die. Beings that are just the same as the pets most people have living in their home - it makes no sense.
However, to go into this place and expose what happens there is illegal. They arrest you for doing that, even if you have hurt no one and were in fact only there to stop others hurting. As you can see laws do not necessarily portray logic, so in a situation where rules stop people from doing what is right or from exposing what is wrong, it is only moral to break them.
