I tried Everlane’s most expensive sweater.
Today, the premium cashmere mock
neck sweater is being released from Everlane. For a brand that hails perfect $100 cashmere and luxe wool styles, a $228 sweater is a far leap from their usual price point. Being a knitter and general sweater lover/collector, I was REALLY curious to find out what sets this style apart from the rest of Everlane’s sweater offerings.
The first big difference is the tightness of the knit—you can tell the yarn strands are very tightly woven together, offering supreme warmth and total opaqueness. It feels expensive. Because the knit texture is such high quality, I believe there will be less opportunity for friction in the usual pilling areas of sweaters: at the underarms and along the waistband. It just feels incredibly solid and well-constructed. The detailing at the neck, where the ribbing comes up in a diamond shape to highlight the mock neck, is a classy detail that really elevates this from your average sweater—it has a modern, clean edge.
The feel of this cashmere is unlike anything I have ever owned—it feels like a velvet waterfall when you put it on, and I think everlane nailed it on the “thickness” of the knit: it is warm without a lot of bulk. I can see myself wearing this alone, or layering short/long sleeve tees if it’s SUPER cold outside. The care instructions read “dry clean only,” which I plan to fully disregard—you can absolutely wash cashmere so long as you are mindful of agitation. I will be putting this in a delicates bag, filling a bucket with lukewarm soapy water, and letting it mostly soak. Wool fibers will not change shape or shrink if you don’t wring them while wet or toss them in the dryer—so do not fear the dry clean label.
Is this sweater worth the cash? Overall, my answer is yes. You will not be missing out if you prefer to go for any of Everlane’s $100 and under styles , as I own two of them and they perform wonderfully. But if you are looking for the crown jewel, investment sweater to have in your closet for years, this could absolutely be it.
