Spent my night Networking with the young ladies of @bezpaintss. As I move away from traditional celebration I'm finding balance. I really enjoyed this event and I'm honored to participate in the opening night of this business. These young sisters did a great job of hosting this event tonight.
I know we missed on Facts on Friday because of our strategic planning yesterday but this facts was shared by our Chamber President during the meeting.
THIS is the POWER of entrepreneurship for us. He BOUGHT his family out of slavery with the proceeds from his patent. Read and SHARE!
Thomas Jennings was the first African-American to receive a patent, on March 3, 1821. His patent was for a dry-cleaning process called “dry scouring”. The first money Thomas Jennings earned from his patent was spent on the legal fees necessary to liberate his family out of slavery and support the abolitionist cause.
Thomas Jennings was a free man born in 1791 in New York City. He was 30 years old when he was granted a patent for a dry cleaning process. In his early 20s Thomas Jennings became a tailor, and later opened a dry cleaning business in the city. As a tailor. Jennings' skills were so admired that people near and far came to him to alter or custom tailor items of clothing for them. Eventually, Jennings reputation grew such that he was able to open his own store on Church street which grew into one of the largest clothing stores in New York City.
While running his business Jennings developed dry-scouring. He had many customers complain of their clothes being ruined by stains and so he began experimenting with cleaners and mixtures that would remove the stains without harming the material. Thomas Jennings earned a large amount of money as a tailor and even more with his dry scouring invention and most of the money he earned went to his abolitionist activities. In 1831, Thomas Jennings became assistant secretary for the First Annual Convention of the People of Color in Philadelphia, PA.
Thomas L. Jennings Dry Scouring technique created modern day dry cleaning. His patent made him a fortune for the time. Jennings was fortunate that he was a free man, and not a slave at the time of his invention. #blackhistory#blackhistory365#browardblackbusinesses#browardblackchamber#browardblackchamberofcommerce#browardcountyblackchamberofcommerce#patent#blackinvestors#blackentrepreneurship

We all know #MerengueTipico, #PericoRipiao, or #Merengue, one of Dominican Republic’s cultural contributions to the world. Dominican Republic, a Black Nation, has gifted the world with Merengue, Bachata, Dembow, and so much more.
Similar to their Black Diasporic primos who have gifted the world with a plethora of genres, USA African Americans have gifted the world with Gospel, Blues, Jazz, Rock, Go-Go, Hip-Hop, to Zydeco.
When I saw the Zydeco dance I was like “Wow there is legit no difference between Dominicans and African Americans, we are all continuation of various indigenous African experience in urban environments.” Our similarities are blatant.
I mashed there genres up to show the similar dance, instrumentation, and use. We use dance as a ritual to commune with spirit, community, and our ancestors. Music and dancing is a ancient portal and we in the Black Diaspora have continued that ancient African tradition. We are all at the root walking indigenous Africans with new dress, languages, and addresses.
Unfortunately our colonized mindsets have left us pitted against each other, fighting for jobs, white validation, and resources rather than seeing the bigger picture and each other as reflections of one another.
We are beautiful, creative, abundant, and resourceful. There is so much to go around to ensure we all eat, are wealthy, and enlightened.
We need each other and I know we will rise together in a 2020 collective vision and mission.
P.S. I love and live in our past and present history. I majored in it at @wcupa and am dedicated to using technology and a transmedia approach to bridging the gap between the Black Diaspora and everyone in between.
With many thanks, love, and peace ✌🏾 #Blackhistory#blackmusic#Africandiaspora

The longer you explain your fall...the longer it takes you to get up. A lot of my decisions are unpopular but, what I'm after not many have either. Feast or Famine!
Major brewing houses obtain coffee from predominantly black populations like Brazil, Ethiopia, and Uganda. Because of the substantial share, black people have in the coffee market minorities should enter into this booming business.

Today, I went to @findyourhilltop to support black business. When I walked in, this mantra, posted on the wall made me smile. I turned to my friend and said those are the words that I now live by.
I didn’t go into detail, but the 13 years of life that I lived away from California, had moments of beauty, inspiration, hope, love and success. But those years also had heartache, heartbreak, disappointment, depression and despair.
Today, this hit a little different. The space was welcoming. The design allowed you to be as social as you wanted to be with single spaces facing the window, tables for 2, out door 4-tops or two large 12 seaters in the center of the space... . As I think about friends and family who’ve become ancestors during my Exodus.
Again, I was reminded that Cali, where my story begins is both my Genesis and my Revelation. It is indeed a great day, to be alive. Create an amazing week Comrades, I am. #blackbusinesses#blackentrepreneurship#windsorpark#losangeles#lacoffeeshops#supportsmallbusiness#hope#inspired#whatadaytobealive
