Remembers The Legendary Princess “A mode of conduct, a standard of courage, discipline, fortitude and integrity can do much to make a woman beautiful.” ― Jacqueline Bisset
The budding romance between Sawai Man Singhji II, the Maharaja of Jaipur and Princess Gayatri Deviji was stylishly old school with much warmth and charm. They married thereafter in May 1940, which created a sensation. Maharaja Man Singhji had a liberating influence on Maharani Gayatri Deviji and his support took her well beyond the traditionally limited activities of a Maharani. She took it upon herself as a challenge to get the women out of purdah.
Ahead of her times, Maharani Gayatri Deviji was a particularly avid equestrienne, an excellent horse rider and an able Polo player. She wore slacks in public, drove cars, sported bobbed hair and played squash and tennis which none of the Maharani’s of Jaipur had done before!!! Every woman dreams of living the classic fairy tale of Maharani Gayatri Devi’s life-style, opulence and extravagance.
Vasutra pays a humble textile tribute to Rajmata Gayatri Deviji @Coomaraswamy Hall, CSMVS Museum, Mumbai on the 6th, 7th and 8th Oct 2019.

Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai born on 12 August 1919 was an Indian physicist. He is considered the father of India’s space programme. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was born in the city of Ahmedabad, in Gujarat state in western India. The Sarabhai family was an important and rich Jain business family. His father Ambalal Sarabhai was an affluent industrialist, owned many textiles mills in Gujarat, and devoted his life to poor people.
He played an important role in the establishment of ISRO. He convinced the government about the importance of setting up a space programme for a developing country like India. He found the cradle of space sciences, Physical Research Laboratory in 1947. He passed away on 30 December 1971.
The nation honoured him by awarding Padmabhushan in 1966 and Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 1972.
Dr. Vikram Sarabhai's Birth Anniversary is coming up on 12 August 2019. Remembering our Founder, the Great man, the Nation Builder, the Father of India's Space Programme (and so much more...). His legacy lives on in the form of the institutions he created - 53 year old VASCSC being the youngest one of all! We at VASCSC are blessed to be working on his Vision of making science accessible to the society. We hope that with the support of all those associated with the Centre, we will work harder and better for achieving the objectives of our Centre.
