Sitting here after a lovely ballet class reflecting on the horrendous comment I got last night from a hateful person on IG.⠀
The comment said, “An overweight ballerina is not able to provide the lines and grace needed to perform. Would you pay $700 to go watch a heavy ballerina? Why do we think it’s so great that someone who does not fit the requirements is an inspirations? We have become a society who worries about hurting people’s feelings. Ballet is fiercely competitive, don’t give false hope.”⠀
This comment is disgusting and awful on so many levels.⠀
To start, the idea that someone would need to pay $700 to see ANY type of dancer is elitist and ridiculous. Most performances are under $100, and I’ve seen New York City Ballet perform for as little as $30. Also, I WOULD pay money to see dancers in larger bodies perform. It would be a beautiful, welcomed change of pace.⠀
Next, BMI is total BS, as well as the idea of “overweight.” Someone could literally have a weight change of a single pound and change BMI categories from being “normal” to being “overweight.” These BS categories don’t actually tell us anything about someone’s body— not to mention that weight doesn’t define health and health doesn’t define worth.⠀
Next, the concept of “size requirements” to be a ballet dancer is antiquated and unhealthy. Ballet dancers naturally exist in a variety of sizes. Some are naturally very thin. Some are naturally more in the middle. Some are naturally in larger bodies. Having these size standards in the ballet world is what makes eating disorders rampant and deters people from even talking classes, nevermind pursuing a professional career. The only time my body has ever fit the stereotype was when I was in the throes of anorexia. People claim that being a certain size makes ballet dangerous — the reality is that ballet is inherently dangerous. Our bodies aren’t meant to do ballet. Reducing risk is all about strength and how you use your body, not a number on a scale.⠀
As a ballerina in a larger body, I do perform. And I do have beautiful lines, extensions, and grace. I will continue doing what I love no matter what hateful people say.⠀
