What do you guys think? 😄
From model to masterpiece: Designed by Heatherwick Studio, Zeitz MOCAA features a soaring atrium created by hollowing out a space within a monumental cluster of concrete grain silos. According to the designer, “carving into a structure that was simultaneously tough and soft was a real challenge, and it was almost archaeology — revealing the layers and the history and then having to adjust and adapt the design accordingly.” Read more about how this cultural masterpiece came to life in our in-depth feature this Monday on @architizer.

Some progress on Pavilion Pool sketch from Thursday - or as some of my engineer friends would call it “the ductwork palace.”
Had a really cool experience while sketching there, one of the patrons approached me and asked me what we were doing. I explained we were the architects of the facility and were including it in some promotional work. I also showed her the sketch I was doing. She proceeded to tell me how much the pool meant to her. She was middle-aged and a cancer survivor. She pointed to the scar on her face where her right eye once resided and then down to a long scar on her left thigh. She then said “you’ll notice I lost a lot of pigment in my skin from the treatment, so having this covered facility makes a huge difference for me!” She then pointed to her grand-daughter splashing in the shallow and beamed proudly that she had been able to teach her how to swim at Pavilion Pool that summer.
That’s really the power of architecture, when it can elevate and transform lives and serve, in some small part, as something that can knit together our generations or our communities into something stronger. There are enough powers at work these days that would tear us apart. I want to do things that help hold us together. Especially at times when we might not be at our strongest.
