⚠️IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND⚠️⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Signal flow is extremely important to understand when you begin processing / mixing your sounds. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ One common mistake that can lead to a MUDDY mix, is not knowing when to turn on/off built-in fx in your synth. Specifically those reverbs and delays!!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If you plan on doing any post-processing (processing outside, and after, the synth like eq, comp, etc.) you might want to turn them off.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Let's say your chain looks like this:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 1. Synth Preset with Reverb + Delay on⁣⁣ 2. DAW's Saturator⁣⁣ 3. DAW's EQ⁣⁣ 4. DAW's Compressor ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Each stage of this chain has an input and output. So the signal is produced in Serum, with its FX on. As a whole, that leaves and goes into the saturator. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The saturator is now saturating the synth + the reverb & delay. All together. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This saturated, reverbed, and delayed synth now flows into an EQ which processes everything that came before it. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Then into a compressor...which blows everything up. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Each stage processes the WHOLE sound coming into it! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It doesn't make much sense from a mixing stand point to leave some of these FX on. Isn't the point of reverb and delay to place a "finished / processed" sound into space/stereo field? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We're actually processing THE SPACE when we leave them on!! It's backwards!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ These FX should typically come at the end of a chain, not at the beginning. Synths have them on by default so the presets actually sound good! Which makes sense from a sound-designers POV, but not so much from a mix engineer's. ⁣⁣ ⁣ Btw, if you're finding this helpful and aren't already following us...you should!! ⁣ ⁣ 👉 @cosmicacademy 👈⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ You can always add these same FX back, later in the chain, if you plan on using post-processing. Your mix will always be cleaner because of it! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ **If you are doing all your processing IN the synth, and none externally...knock yourself out! Save today’s post & use when in studio! **PML Classic** Many people kept asking us how custom swing grooves can be created. Of course you can always dive into Ableton’s groove pool to add a certain type of swing that fits your song. Today’s post is pretty detailed and gives you a good starting point for standard or really crazy swing beats. Extra Tip After you applied one of the basics beats with triplets, septuplets or any other crazy measure, you can always spice it up - by deactivating the grid (cmd+4). This way you are free in moving around the different notes just enough to make it noticable. In our example we slightly shift the snares for a more human and off feel.Try playing around with this and you will get really interesting results! Try to follow along while creating your own unique beat - leave the path as soon as you feel your own beat coming alive! Program all variants presented and you will find your own favorites on the go. SAVE THIS POST for your next mixdown!!⁣ ⁣⁣ Believe it or not, a great way to find muddiness in your mix is to actually BOOST the frequencies first...then cut. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Follow the steps above and give this a try on your master. Ideally you really want to go back to the mix to fix the SPECIFIC SOUNDS that are causing such overlap.
