VISUAL POEM for #APAHM: “the subtlety in your beauty; the beauty in your subtleties”
— the mess of my thoughts while I eat dinner with a white family.

Sometimes we have to teach our parents. It’s hard and a long process but just like they don’t know what it’s like to be born or grow up here, we don’t know what it’s like to move here, alone, without much. 🌱 Swipe ▶️▶️▶️▶️
@PenguinClassics are usually titles by white/male authors, but this summer, Penguin Books expanded Asian American representation in the Classics collection!
✊🏼 “The Hanging on Union Square” by H.T. Tsiang
✊🏽 “East Goes West” by Younghill Kang
✊🏾 “No-No Boy” by John Okada
✊🏿 “America is in the Heart” by Carlos Bulosan
We're definitely adding these books to our summer reading list! We're also contemplating the term "classic"—who, and which sub-culture, gets to determine what is and isn't a "classic"? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments, alongside your personal "classics" as well. It's time we spoke for ourselves 💥
📣 UPDATE: Turns out that @penguinclassics didn’t get permission from the Okada family to print No-No Boy and royalties for this beloved classic are not going back to the Okada family. While we appreciate the visibility that Penguin has given these authors, we disagree with their treatment of the rights to authors’ works. So with that—please support the University Presses (such as @uwapress and @kayapress) who are fighting to champion AsAm writers and their work.
We wouldn’t have known this had it not been for our community—so THANK YOU for teaching us something new. Keep it coming! Race and identity are such complex topics and it helps to have folks like you sharing articles, insight, and information that help us stay informed. 🙏🏼

Part 1 of an ongoing series of the reality of being a first-generation American. Just remember, two things can be true at the same time.
What other dualities have you experienced?
On Tuesday, there will be an event in Oakland, CA to learn more. Event info in IG story!!! Find out what your local immigrant advocacy organizations are doing! And keep us posted!
[Last week], the Trump administration published new rules re-defining “public charge.” The rules will force immigrants and their families to choose between life-saving resources and the ability to stay in this country. The rules go into effect on October 15. We must protect our neighbors so they too can feed their families and contribute and participate in our communities. .

Join @napawf as we mobilize Asian American Pacific Islanders to fight back against public charge. Trump’s new proposed immigration rule could change everything for immigrants in this country. It could prevent immigrants from coming to the US or obtaining their green card if they have used public benefits. Submit a public comment against this new rule! https://actnow.io/NurH6eL

I'm really sad that I can't support a US release starting Asian actors because of the idiocy of the main actress, Yifei Liu. She supports the Hong Kong police in their brutal crack down on protestors of the fascist Chinese regime. Police brutality is unacceptable and so is defending it. The police and HK are acting as an arm of the Chinese state, which denies or would deny human rights and freedoms to the Uyghr Muslim people within their own border, to Tibetans, to dissenters, and now to Hong Kongers. of course they would do the same in Taiwan if they ever gain control there. I am sure this movie will make a lot of money regardless, especially in China. But please, if you support human rights, don't go see it, and let Disney know why. #mulanmovie#boycottmulan#liuyifei#standwithhongkong#hongkong#policebrutality#freetaiwan#mulan#mulandisney#disney#disneymulan#asianamerican#aapi
