My COVID-19 distraction – daily blog on weeds for a month
This is #Enoggera Creek in Ashgrove, Brisbane. It’s my back neighbour and as you can see if you look closely the creek banks are almost completely overrun with weeds – albeit in this photo it all looks quite pretty in the afternoon sun.
On the opposite bank you can see a line of taro: the dark green heart shaped leaves (olocasia esculenta) just above the waterline. These plants have been a special focus for the local Land Care group, Save Our Waterways Now.
They have taken on the challenge of caring for the Enoggera Creek catchment and have conducted a number of campaigns aimed at removing taro or reducing its proliferation. Tough work when with each flood the tuberous corms separate and are carried downstream.
Taro is consumed in many parts of the world: harvested for its starchy tubers. It cannot be eaten raw – causing swelling, severe itching, gastro and other physical distress. The sap from stems and leaves is also toxic so removal is slow and careful work.
An aggressive grower this plant is problematic in many coastal #waterways in #Queensland and New South Wales competing with #native species for nutrients and light.
