Early on, I was a bit hesitant to be a sniper. I was told that I would be seeing death up close, almost like it was through a scientist’s microscope. I had seen action in Crete and Africa, fighting the Allies almost every step of the way, and the violence I witnessed from my own hands was enough to drive any normal man insane, to the point where they probably would have killed themselves. But I have known, especially from a young age, that I was not normal. I would spend my free time working on my father’s and grandfather’s firearms. I would hunt rabbits, fox and deer near the creek at my Uncle’s farm.
I had been preparing for this lifestyle since I was a boy, and the only reason I was hesitant to become a marksman when I entered the service was because I knew it would consume me.
At Monte Cassino alone, I killed five men in one day. Three British, one Moroccan looking man, and one Canadian. I knew he was Canadian because I saw the patch on his shoulder when he went down. I held up their advance for almost ten hours that day, and the feeling of having the power to do that to an entire Army was one that I did not take lightly.
It got to my head. I told myself I was invincible; that I had done more than god had in this war. Reality is a sick joker I came to learn. As I was moving positions within the bombed out monastery, I felt a sharp pain in my back, and my legs give out from underneath me. I thought I was safe; in cover and away from the fighting, but I was wrong. I bled out sprawled over some rocks after being shot by a sniper in the back. I can not tell you that I felt pain, because I did not. The bullet had shattered my spine. All I could think about were all of the rabbits and foxes and deer that I had slain, and how I was finally on the receiving end of a rifle like they had been all those years before.
