Cold War is a gorgeous, unyielding heartbreaker. A romance and a tragedy stretching across decades, it’s rich and allusive, a movie that promises to take its audience seriously and then delivers on that promise. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pawel Pawlikowski’s masterful new film about the amour fou shared by an ethnomusicologist and a budding singer during the 1940s and 1950s. The follow-up to 2013’s Ida (which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film), Pawlikowski’s latest is a rapturously tumultuous romance set to the sounds of Polish folk songs and Parisian jazz, and its tone is epitomized by a particular tune—“Dwa Serduszka” (“Two Hearts”)—that reoccurs, in different forms, throughout its decades-spanning tale. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “I knew it from this folk ensemble which I grew up with,” says the 61-year-old Pawlikowski about the theme to Cold War, which earned him the Best Director prize at Cannes. Every shot in the film is framed as perfectly as a photograph. The images and faces of rural Poland have echoes of Roman Vishniac’s work, and the smoky, sexy shots of Paris recall those of Robert Doisneau. Cold War is also a paean to an era when love blossomed without constant communication. Cold War takes it a step further, deftly showing how people’s characters and choices are molded by the ideologies of the places they come from, and gaming out what that means for their greatest loves and longings. It’s a work of unspeakable beauty, one that doesn’t leave you when the film ends, and its deceptively simple focus on a love story can’t mask its cinematic achievement.
