the b-52s entered my universe in late 1989 just as that their breakthrough hit “love shack” was in heavy rotation at both MTV and top 40 radio. but it was the follow-up single “roam,” the fourth single from their most commercially successful album to date, “cosmic thing,” that solidified my fandom of the whimsical group.
for the album’s fifth and final single, the group opted for the autobiographical “deadbeat club” that is about the group’s early days in their hometown of athens, georgia. the band’s drummer kirk strickland wrote the song, which was originally titled, “there is a river,” shortly after band’s first guitarist ricky wilson died from AIDS complications in 1985. in an 1990 interview with spin magazine, kirk shared that he didn’t tell other brand members that he was thinking of ricky when he wrote the song. “they just picked up on it” he stated.
“deadbeat club” peaked at #30 on june 2, 1990. it would be the groups last top 30 pop hit to date. they would score one more top 40 hit three years later with the theme song of the 1994 live action motion picture, “the flintstones.”

1. (Obverse and Reverse) 10-Ruble banknote from the Russian Federation. The largest country in the world, modern-day Russia was born out of the disintegration of the Soviet Union and is the largest former-Soviet state. With the Russian SFSR as the dominant state within the USSR, Russia inherited most of the Soviet Union’s resources and hardware that made it a superpower. The formative years of the Russian Federation were difficult however, with President Boris Yeltsin leading the country through a deep recession and periods of lawlessness. The country also fought against Chechen separatists, leading to terrorist attacks perpetrated by the latter against Russian civilians. On December 31, 1999 in the midst of a financial crisis and a deteriorating security situation, Boris Yeltsin resigned and was succeeded by his Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin. The new president oversaw the end of the Chechen insurgency, an economic rebound, and a return to a sense of stability and global influence. Though praised for the progress he has made in stabilizing Russia, Putin’s relationship with the West has been overshadowed by the Russian annexation of Crimea as well as the subsequent sanctions imposed in retaliation. The economic and military growth that has accelerated in recent years is indicative of a return by Russia to superpower status. Series 1997.

Being the worst time of the year with allergies it's been rough trying to do anything. But the remodeling hasn't stopped. I can't wait for a couple months to receive my #banjokazooie statue!
